Comparing Trump to autocratic leaders such as Erdogan, Orban and others of that ilk is just plain lost on most Americans, who generally don't know anything about them. It's also why ignorant MAGA diehards are incapable of giving up their koolaid delusions.
What the NYT does is attempting to be all things to all readers, which inevitably results in the passive voice delivering "news stories" that people stop reading after the first one or two paragraphs.
I can't love this enough. I had a digital NYT & WAPO subscription for 20 years until their whimpering supplication to MAGA during the '24 campaign forced me to CANCEL just before 11/05 election day. Substack isn't quite a 360 degree substitute, BUT I'm 100% GRATEFUL that I don't get force fed "Conservative Voices" (Nazis) like Marc Theissen, Meagan McArdle, Hugh Hewitt, etc., or fussy little "eek a mouse" simps like George Will, David Brooks, Ross Douhat, or the insufferable condescension of know-it-all assholes like Tom Friedman and Nick Kristof. Apologies for several repeat offenders I've overlooked. Those Vichy collaborators that DO show up here on Substack can just be ignored, and every troll commenter can be blocked.
Sure, all of his "actions" are legal, he can sit there and sign EOs to his heart's content (assuming he has a heart), it's the implementation of those directives that is illegal AF, but those are being carried out by others, many of whom are too stupid to realize the risks they are taking (looking at you, BigBallz).
"a broad coalition that doesn’t risk alienating anyone, especially not the conservative people in coalition who are principled enough to oppose Trump but might decide to support him instead if they see anyone at a protest wearing an “EAT THE RICH” T-shirt."
Anyone who would abandon the cause of deposing Trump because of a FUCKING T-shirt is NOT someone you want to be in a foxhole with
Anyone whose dedication to this project is fragile enough to be that easily derailed can't be trusted
"The building of this coalition should start with an acknowledgment that Mr. Trump is the legitimate president" He is not. He was constitutionally ineligible, and the Supreme Court ruling otherwise was an ultra vires usurpation of a political role.
I don't want to hear this shit from their editorial board, not after all their efforts to undermine Hillary in 2016 and Kamala in 2024. And Biden up until he withdrew and she took over. I *might* be willing to listen if the first thing out of their collective mouth was "Wow, we really fucked up, we're sorry, this is where we went wrong and this is what we're never doing again in the future," but since they'll never do that, fuck 'em.
NYT is nothing more than an apologist rag now! Unsubscribe from it and don't waste anymore of your time reading its drivel. There are good resources in independent media that are worth following (present company included). I detest a publication that will not take a clear stand on fascism. NYT has lost all credibility and I simply have no time for it.
It appears that Bezos is in charge of editorial policy. NYT has to force feed trump two tablespoons of sugar with each critique in order to avoid being slaughtered on truth social. I'd say X as well, but it appears musk is kind of busy trying to gather the strands of his empire. Further, the NYT sounds like an alcoholic tentatively accepting that their drinking has caused problems. But instead of alcoholism, the destructive behavior is sanewashing. NYT is deeply conflicted about whether or not to give up sanewashing trump all together - much the same way an addict might try to control their substance abuse so that they don't fall down in the gutter and barf with complete abandon. Disclaimer - I am very sorry of this post offends anyone. Oh, and I gave up my NYT sub about six months ago precisely because of the sanewashing.
Why are still treating rightwingers like toddlers in the middle of the terrible twos? We have to tiptoe around lest they throw a temper tantrum and toss democracy off of their high chairs. But if we just talk softly to them, they will totally eat the strained peas.
We have no idea how popular some of these other dickholes are, because there is no free press, and it doesn't really matter at this point. Sometimes -- and I pray the party establishment learns this -- you have to drive the narrative while you still can.
It's a mixed bag, they have some good talent and a maddening capacity for publishing RW opinion as fact. I'd have hoped they'd rise to the moment, they're being pretty timid about it to be sure, there's glimmer of hope in that they're sticking with the AP with the name of a certain body of water South of the border.
I would argue that their GOOD reporting is what makes them so 'dangerous'...It would be much better for us if we could dismiss the NYT Altogether. The good reporting provide a cover of legitimacy...All that needs to be remembered:
They fail us when it MATTERS MOST...
Analogous to how Krysten Sinema voted with dems over 95% of the time...But when it came to the existentially important stuff, she voted with republicans...And in a majority margin so small, it was a DECIDING vote....The 'voting with dems 95% of the time' was COVER for her REAL agenda
Let's all put on our very best Susie Collins face, hold hands, and join in chorus of "We find it very concerning" in our very best dulcet tones.

NYT Editorial Board: It's time for Americans to endeavor to persevere.
Fuck Ted Cruz.
Yep...I remain 'unimpressed' with the NYT...
Did the NYT point out the many things that Richard Speck did that did NOT involve murdering nurses? you know...for balance?
Just curious

But in the day we would have called them a running dog for the MAGA movement.

this^^^^^
As a recovering alcoholic, I'd say your analogy not only isn't offensive, but hits the nail squarely on the head.
I don’t think they’re deeply conflicted at all. They still want billionaires to not pay taxes.
I see Sgt. Schultz heads the NYT Editorial Board.

Murc's law
“But if we just talk softly to them, they will totally eat the strained peas.”
Your innocence is very charming!
I think Wookie is pointing out that that's the thinking of the NYT. They are the ones doing the tiptoeing

Fuck you, the fucking 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘠𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴. You fluffed TFG as hard as every other MSM.
Until you accept that you sanewashed his ignorance and dementia, while lying about Biden's "age concerns," you are dead to me.
You also propped up bullshit like Whitewater and Dick Cheney's lies that created The Iraq War. So you can continue to keep fucking yourselves.

Not defending the Times, but at least they endorsed Harris, unlike another I could mention.
