To cleanse the pallet, there is a sweet scene in the 1973 film “Breezy,” a movie about a 19-year-old beautiful hippie who falls in love with 55 year old William Holden. Directed by Clint Eastwood, who wasn’t embracing an old-man fantasy about a teen girl in any way whatsoever. Anyway, Breezy spots an injured shaggy dog in the curb. Holden dismisses it, telling her the dog is hopeless and they can’t help. She runs away in tears. Holden grudgingly picks up the dog and takes him away in his car. We don’t see the dog again…until maybe an hour later. Holden and Breezy are getting it on, he’s embarrassed about her youth, she’s frustrated that he’s so hung up on age. He tells her not to make plans one morning, and takes her to a clinic, where she opens the door and finds poochy sitting on a table looking fine. She cries, hugs the dog, Holden smiles, and it’s a sweet scene. I’m not sure about 19 and 55, but I also enjoyed the movie Lifeguard (1976) with Sam Elliott and Kathleen Quinlan. He’s 33, she’s 17. It’s a similar problem, but with very different endings. Hollywood likes those stories I guess.
