I heard about this from cousins who lived 2 train stops north of Long Beach. What a disaster that storm was. They were lucky, no major damage except from trees on the garage, but no power for several weeks.Then it got weirdly cold and they were afraid their water pipes would freeze, so I told them an old trick which was to leave the water running at every tap - just running at a steady stream but very slow, with a washcloth or sponge in the bowl where the water hits it so the noise doesn't drive you crazy (don't block the drain hole), and this would keep the pipes from freezing. It really works. They told all their neighbors.
These cousins had gone to New Orleans with their church group and spend 2 weeks helping to clean up flooded houses for other people. And then they got hit. I felt so bad for them because I wasn't able to go to New York and return the favor.
I don't care how tough they are, it would be rather stupid (and expensive) to leave the equipment there with a 9 to 13 foot storm surge predicted. Which is why I'm surprised that Trump didn't order it. Hopefully anything not made to withstand flooding was evacuated with the troops.
From what I've heard, it's pretty much a ghost town.
Many of the Marines have been evacuated, from what some lady at yoga whose brother is stationed at Camp LeJeune, was telling me.
According to her, her brother was thrilled that he could come home and not have the days taken out of his leave. Apparently, this did not sit well with his gung-ho father who insisted that, in his day, Marines would have stood shirtless in the path of the hurricane and punched it away while shouting whatever it is that Marines shout (don't know... my family is mostly Army).

When I was a kid in the Reagan 80’s, I remember reading stories in my Weekly Reader about where acid rain comes from. I also remember the very first time I heard about global warming—again, 4th grade or so, in the 80’s—in one of those “free newspapers in the classroom” programs. I remember it pretty well because I used it as inspiration for a short story about a far-future earth where everything was underwater and snow didn’t exist.
Long story short, I don’t believe it was political until assholes like Rush made it that way.

The problem there is that despite having so much money that Scrooge McDuck would blanch, they don't actually control everything, everywhere. They have to play nice with other plutocrats across the globe and you don't do that by blowing up the gold mine that they are all skimming from and forcing all of them to invest similarly or be left behind.
