Seeing that New York City leans to the left and votes accordingly, I doubt this will bode well for Cuomo’s chances in the primary.

Ta, Dok. Story tiem: I have loathed and detested Andrew Cuomo since he left the DA's office to join a tiny boutique law firm at which I was a legal secretary. His presence was SO toxic (no sexual assault; he was dating the junior partner) that I developed spastic colon. "My" attorney, a fun and brilliant arbitration specialist who represented artists, designers, and the like, came to me one afternoon, very sheepishly, and asked if it would be okay if they moved my desk. I replied that as long as I had a word processor and a phone, they could move me to a closet for all I cared. What upset me was the Andrew came in over the weekend with the kid who did our Xeroxing and took our mail to the post office PUT THEIR FILTHY HANDS all over my stuff. It was none of their fucking business what supplements I was taking and what brand of tampons I had in my desk. It literally made me sick, and I turned in my notice.

Andrew Cuomo is poison. My fellow New Yorkers, do us all a favor and give him NO place on your ballot. There are enough low information voters that name recognition could push him over the top. My ranked choice is made although I have yet to vote. If you're in Council District 2, same for Anthony Wiener and Allie Ryan -- give them no place on your ballot. This is what democracy looks like. I'm just sorry it's so late and so few will read this.

If I despise anybody more vehemently than those belonging to the current regime, it's the Gestapo-like goons who participate in these raids. Get a life.

"The US attorney’s office said it is still “investigating” the incident and may yet file charges" I think Letitia James needs to be the one filing charges, against the ICE officers for assault and kidnapping.

Serious question:

Does Lander, Hochul, or anybody else know whether these thugs were, in fact, ICE?

Setting aside for the moment the fact that ICE does not have the authority to arrest citizens, as Lander clearly pointed out...

How do we know that these unbadged, warrantless, masked thugs were ICE, as opposed to, say, terrorists disguised as ICE, like the one who just assassinated two people earlier this week?

Because "somebody" said they were?

By coincidence, I was in downtown Manhattan yesterday afternoon, by the courthouses. heading back to my office, I saw a good size crowd gathered and heard people speaking to the crowd. It was a group of New Yorkers protesting about Lander's arrest. Glad to see people speaking up all over the place!

I would have reversed my number 1 and 2 ranking if I'd voted after this incident.

How do you "cross-endorse" someone in a primary?

Expand full comment
Manders's avatar

It's ranked choice voting. If you're trying to keep, say, a serial sexual harasser who's also corrupt as fuck but has name recognition from winning, you cross-endorse each other so that voters who like you will know who else to rank.

"we aren’t sure whether Lander is supposed to have assaulted the ICE guys when he was having his hand pulled off the immigrant fellow’s shoulder, when he was being grabbed by multiple masked agents, or when he was being jammed up against the wall."

"I was assaulted!! He smashed his face right into my fist! He jammed his crotch right onto my knee! He slammed his ribs repeatedly into my poor, defenseless steel-toed boots! I had no choice but to arrest him after all that viciousness!!"

The old National Lampoon had an article about the Sandinistas labeling their underhanded tactics, e.g., "Uses stomach to get stabbed with".

Or, as a friend of mine called it, "Head-butting the officer's fist."

Am I missing something, did the article actually say that charges against the immigrant had been DISMISSED and they put him under arrest anyway? And that this isn't the first time it's happened?

Correct. This is what they're doing now: the feds ask the judge to dismiss the case against the immigrant, which means they no longer have a case pending but also have not received court permission to stay in the country, and then ICE can haul them away.

NYT also wrote

“Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller who is running for mayor, was detained by ICE agents at an immigration court as he tried to escort a migrant out of the courthouse to prevent his arrest”

They made it sound like he was breaking him out of prison in a laundry hamper even though he clearly says they can have him if they “show a warrant”

Lander didn’t break any laws whatsoever.
