Well, now, two hours later, it turns out that hanging out with you guys was not a great way to fall back to sleep. I’m gonna get up and get my shower, and then maybe I can snooze a bit afterwards. Big day. Oh yeah, I say that, and then my body starts to yawn. I’m not gonna fall for that, but maybe I’ll just lay down for a few more minutes…

Still watching "House of a Thousand Dolls" (I pause a lot for phone calls and chatting here, okay?). There's a continuity error so bad at around the 1 hour 5 minute mark that even I noticed it. Our Hero has gone back to an informant's room only to find it trashed, with the chair on its side on the floor.

Except the very next shot, the chair is upright with the cat leaping off of it and knocking it over in the process.

Oopsie.

I love finding those mistakes. They are so easy to make in movies shot with one camera, though the one you noticed is somewhat unusual, like they stitched the scene together out of order. I'm not sure how the director overlooked something like that.

That continuity error is why there were only 993 dolls in the studio's final cut.

I couldn't get through that article yesterday. I'm pretty gullible myself, but wtf?

I'm old, and old school. I once replied to a personal ad in the Reno paper. I lived almost 200 miles from Reno, what was I thinking? After a couple of letters and a phone call or two, we decided to meet. She was nice. Told me she was tired of dating mechanics because she worked in an auto parts store and that's who she met. I told her I was an equipment operator, but when her car broke down I fixed it for her, which kinda blew my cover. Never heard from her again!

True. Dunno as I would go meet someone I never spoke to for sure.

The spawn wants to tho. Eldest did with California girlfriend, but they had video whatever on discord (? not sure how that all works) so at least talked to her in real time. But youngest has only ever known this person in text.

And said person is constantly making excuses why they cannot meet up, which to me is a red flag, but youngest just accepts all the excuses as legit. And they may be, but idk, seems like a lot of excuses.

so I went into the paint store last week, because I decided I was not happy with the coverage on the ceiling that the pro left. And the paint store guy said he hadn’t seen me around for a while and how was I and was I still working and I told them I retired three months ago.

He asked how that was going, and I told him I was busier now than I was when I was working. And he paused and looked at me. That guy does gravitas better than anyone I know, and I frankly don’t know how his kids got away with ANYTHING. He said, I have something I say to all of you retirees who come in here and tell me that same thing. This is on behalf of all of us who are still working (trust me he said that a whole lot more eloquently than I’m giving him credit for): you guys need to figure your stuff out.

And it’s honestly the best retirement advice I’ve ever gotten.

I’m going in there today for a bucket of paint to finish off the garage walls because I can’t wait any longer for the pro to have time to finish the job. And then I have a PT appointment, and I need to swing by the bank, and then my work colleagues have invited me in for a retirement potluck, which I think in part is timed so that I can admire the shiny award that my ex boss was given because she said high store on that kind of thing, and then I need to come out to the house because my friend with the high reach and the wide wingspan wants to do the painting of the walls, and I am so happy to pay him to do it. And then I have an appointment in the evening for a deep tissue massage. And then tomorrow, I’m getting pictures taken to renew both of my passports. I’ve been putting that off because I wanted to get to the point where I don’t have this grim set to my face, but fuck it. If I need it to get across the border, nobody’s gonna care what I look like.

So it’s a little embarrassing to go back and face paint store guy today because I haven’t figured my stuff out yet.

It's really weird to be renting after 40 years of home ownership. I have no projects and if something goes wrong, I call the landlord. I do keep a running list of projects I would do to this place if I ever owned it. The building is for sale now, so we'll see.

Expand full comment

Call me naive or uninformed but I am of the impression that renting in Europe is more civil, for the most part, than here on the other side of the Atlantic.

Expand full comment
oblivias's avatar

The rules are in the favor of the renter. The lease is for three years, but you can break it any time with a little notice. They, on the other hand, can't kick you out. Well, I suppose they can if you don't pay the rent. Also, if the energy rating on the rental is poor, they can't raise the rent at all. They also can't raise the rent if it would be out of line with similar rentals in the same neighborhood.

I get a call every year or two from the real estate agent I bought this place through. He asked if I wanted to put the place on the market and I said not this year, and he said, if you do sell, what would you do? Would you buy a condo?

And I thought, take me out and shoot me, please. I couldn’t envision what one does with one’s time when one is not owned by a house.

I still like that place for you that you posted the pictures for a few years ago. All rococo and creams and pale blue.

And if that happens, you build another roof, or take out the sump pump and plug it in. If they have good bones, you fix the things that need fixing, and you keep moving on.

My theory of house is that a house is a system of systems. Each system has to work, and all the systems have to work together, and when they do come out, you don’t give it any thought. And so often, look around and realize that you could improve upon matters, and then you’re in for it.

If I leave this place, it will probably be because things have become unbearable here. And if that happens, I think the course of wisdom would be for the equity that I have in this property to set my budget, more or less. So I appreciate what I have now, but I try to love it with an open hand. I expect if I move, the next place will be pretty modest. But if it’s within walking distance to a beach, that would be pretty amazing.

I feel driven by the weather right now. It looks like snow over the weekend, and then it’ll be consistently in the belows next week, so it is time to pull the last of the tasks together.

And then I’m going to roll right over into inside deferred maintenance and up doodles. But hopefully by the end of this winter, it’ll be pretty all right.

Retireeitis - my dad used to speak of it. When folk retire, they have a list, and it looks big, and they are go go go go because they are used to working like that. Maybe a Eucharistic minister too? whatevs, church stuff), and also for the union, helping other retirees navigate all the retirement stuff on the computers.

Thus, he lasted more than a decade more than his contemporaries, who all dropped dead a year or two after retirement. He always claimed they died of boredom. If the cancer hadn't gotten him, he'd probably still be roving about
