It's very efficient. I once watched a Hallmark movie on a screen in a sports bar with no sound. Santa and Mrs. Clause had a big fight, and Mrs. Clause took off for Las Vegas with one of the elves.

Evil hotel manager, young single mother assistant manager with son who's friends with the hunky bartender. Everything by the numbers.

And then they'll segue to, "Women gave birth without doctors and hospitals for thousands of years, they'll be fine!"

Our niece is stuck in Louisiana (state motto: Hey, at least we ain't Mississippi!), and drives most of three hours to Houston any time she needs to see a doctor, because competent doctors outside New Orleans abandoned the state years ago.

Since most of these rules are by men, do you think they would mind a wife dying in labor? Just a chance to get a new younger wife.

Red states always have had outrageous numbers of maternity deaths for women. Lousiana is number one with 58.1 deaths per 100KGeorgia is number 2 - they had a obs/gen shortage of doctors because of an odd reason - apparently courts found for medical malpractice for a large percentage of cases and medical malpractice in death is a real money maker in Georgia meaning Attorneys or their wives could not get doctors, but eventually it changed to doctor shortage when they just moved out. New Jersey is 4th, don't know why )shame) but I do know the state is investing heavily to change tis now with additional medicaid help for expectant mothers and other things.then a bunch of red states - surprise. California is the best with 4 deaths out of 100K. .

Well.....it IS Sandpoint. Why would any sane professional migrate to that backwater junction? Hey, I know......maybe the Nazi's up there can get Dr. Mengele to open up a practice.....

Hey, we will welcome you to Houston! Most areas are great, just do your homework on neighborhoods.

Finally, an elitist free state with no doctors or teachers. I’m guessing it’s a comfortable state for many lawyers, however.

Glad you'll help turn Houston blue. I lived in Houston for 6 years, then East Texas and Dallas for 6 more years, then high-tailed it back to CA as quickly as I could. Never got used to the weather. However, there a many nice places in Texas to explore. Ironically, Texas is doing a lot better than CA in encouraging solar and using storage batteries to shore up their grid - the relative lack of hoops to jump through is a boon in this case.

I've heard a distressing number of people say that in complete earnest.

I grew up on a farm and I read a lot of mediaeval history. Pregnancy and birth are dangerous as fuck. In fact, probably the most dangerous thing the average person will do in their lifetime. Even today, with the best medical care in the world, parents and babies die because pregnancy and birth are dangerous as fuck.

Damn the fucking Wellness industry, which got hold of pregnancy and childbirth and pretended it was all starlight and rainbows because It's Natural and people can make a bunch of money off demonising good medical care. Yeah, cyanide and botulinum are also Natural, you reality-denying fucks.

Yes, there are major issues around bodily autonomy of the pregnant person, explanation of options, pain control, rehabilitation of physical injuries following birth etc: especially as these issues mainly affect women and the medical industry is run by men. But it's also important to acknowledge things can go wrong between two heartbeats, the labouring person can be in no condition to give informed consent, sometimes there just isn't *time* to carefully explain things, and the most detailed birth plan and affirming doula isn't going to prevent things going wrong. This shit is COMPLICATED.

Yet people will say "Oh, birth was SUCH a carefree and NATURAL part of life before DOCTORS got involved, all mums* ever needed was the village wise woman". And get upset when I give them a few statistics about what ACTUALLY used to happen to "Mama and Bubby" before modern obstetric care.

(* Because OF COURSE these Warrior Wimmin never take pregnant trans men and NB people into account)

No no no, it'll be all the fault of all those sluts who drink and smoke and take drugs and have DISEASES because of all their premarital sex-having, and are having babies in their 30s instead of their late teens because they wanted an "education" and a "job" and "financial independence".

How's about you just do what your husband tells you as the Good Lord intended, missy, and He'll be sure to answer your prayers with a healthy little boy.

Doubt it. Midwives can solve *some* pregnancy and birth complications, but they can't give cesarians.
