It may have actually started from a different word, you're right... but I think, at least in England, it does have at least a subliminal connection. "Scotch tape" is also called that to signify that it is "frugal"--it's so Imperial English (my Mother was English) to attack people who are trying to farm difficult land and have to pinch pennies, as being "cheap."

As someone who loves words and language, I cannot BELIEVE it never occurred to me that "gypped" came from "gypsy". Duh, of course it did. Well, there's a word now excised from my vocabulary as well.
