I think it'll be a heavy lift--Texas may still be some years away from the Dems being able to win statewide--but a hard run for Hegar is necessary to get Dem turnout up and help a lot of the downballot races. We have to keep fighting for this state, keep building our voter base, and play the long game here. We're a lot closer than we were a decade ago.
I've been in Texas 50 years; Cornyn has been an embarrassment in every public office he's held - he's been on the public dole longer than an overripe banana (where did he get all that money on that salary??). Dumb as a stump, charisma of a truck stop hot dog, skating by on kissing up, Velcroed to who might do him the most good, and survives politically by portraying himself as some latter day Randolph Scott (Randolph Scott!!) to save us from the POC hordes. That's Texas - last in everything important. He needs to be sent to his rocking chair down at the ranch, where he and Rick Perry can swap n-word jokes.
