The Dalles Bridge in the picture crosses the Columbia near the Maryhill Museum of Art, which was built by Sam Hill. Sam was a railroad tycoon who saw the writing on the wall and championed the automobile. He thought that to get people in to cars they needed somewhere to go and roads that would allow them to get there faster. Horse and buggy roads were too rough and vibrated the cars to an early demise. The Maryhill Loop Road was the first asphalt paved road in Washington. The museum was supposed to lure people to the wilds of eastern Washington. Once they got there he hoped to jumpstart civilization in the boonies. The museum has an eclectic collection of art, some of which was donated by Queen Marie of Romania.
