EU and post-Brexit Britain are currently in negotiations on what sort of deal they're going to have for trade (Britain expects to be treated like a member, but to not have to take any dirty immigrants or conform to any nasty EU laws covering pretty much anything). Now Greece has gotten the EU to agree that one of the things that will happen before serious talks start is that stolen goods have to be returned to the rightful owners.
There is no return to "sanity," however you define it. That ship sailed long ago. Pinpointing the exact date is a bit of a trick, but I'd put it somewhere around 1964.
If we get the opportunity for reform, I propose the following: The Justice Dept was created by Congress and therefor can be dissolved by Congress. Well, perhaps not dissolved, but should be MOVED. To the Judiciary Branch including all it's law enforcement subsidiaries. The President would still nominate the AG, but the dept would be separated from the Administration. I don't see anything in the Constitution that would prohibit this as Article 2, Clause 2 says "Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments".
I think Sessions was just too far out of his depth to really be a threat to the Justice Dept. Plus he must've feared actual retribution over how he helped Chump with Russia...
