Apartheid was the target of my first mass protest experience, in college. Once I'd singlehandedly defeated that hateful regime, I never expected to have to confront it AGAIN--let alone here.
At least it's finally spring. As the Beach Boys sang, "Student Demonstration Time"! And time for the rest of us to get out there and fight those old battles. AGAIN.
The South Africans can reject him, but I think the best thing would be for them to embrace him, welcome him with (very Black) open arms, bombard the embassy with delegations of (very Black) business people and cultural types, invite him to every single (very Black) public event they can think of, and drown him in a sea of (very Black) unrelievedly fake hospitality.

The University of Cape Town was running freshman orientation while I was there, and something like 80 per cent of the first-years were Black. I was hanging around with white academics, mostly, but I didn't hear even a whisper of racist sentiment -- people want their country to make it through this.
And the country -- the Western Cape is unlike anywhere I've ever seen. Cape Town has a gigantic, uninhabitable mountain (Table Mountain and Devil's peak) smack-dab in the middle of it. It's just stunning.
I most certainly DO know who he is. I can also picture the short-fingered vulgarian musing....now who's the worst person I could send to South Africa to get revenge for them sending me that guy I had to throw out? I know! Bozell!!
But, South Africa doesn't have to take him, and I hope they refuse.
