The Japanese did awful things in World War II that went above and beyond wartime fun, including mass rape and and forced prostitution. Japanese rightwingers does not like to be reminded of this, so some terrible people are suing Glendale, California, for having the gall to erect a memorial to "comfort women" -- the women enslaved by the Japanese as prostitutes for the military. Wait what??
Apparently the research and writing of her book took such a toll on her that she want into a deep clinical depression that ended with her taking her own life.
<blockquote>Can one of you drive over here and lift our jaw off the ground please? We were hitherto unaware that civic art needed to conform to the wishes of foreign powers. Hell, civic art doesn&rsquo;t even have to conform to the wishes of our own federal government. </blockquote> Freedom of expression, how does it work?
The US doesn&#039;t try to deny that the internment camps existed, nor does it refrain from expressing its profound regret for implementing that shameful policy. So moral equivalence? Not quite.
The people who were interned in those camps were loyal Americans, some of who enlisted in the military <i>while still being interned</i> and fought valiantly for their country in the War. They did not identify with or in any way feel solidarity with the fascistic military junta that controlled the Imperial government in Japan at the time. The tragic truth is that the internees were US citizens who were every bit as loyal and supportive of the United States as were the people who interned them.
Very barristerial!

Where&#039;s &quot;fair and balanced&quot; when you need it?
Not one for endless lawyer jokes, but have to ask: possible to sue for embarrassing the profession, or possible to embarrass the profession?
To tell you the truth, if that photo up at the top of this entry is of the memorial in question, then I would probably sue, too.

They are no doubt still fuming about that memorial that the US put up out in the middle of Pearl Harbor, too.
Art or porn? The distinction can get pretty blurry.

Also, too, the monument was erected by the City of Glendale, California, not by the United States federal government.
Using his lifeless, inorganic and immobile presence to threaten a whole new community.
Wouldn&#039;t surprise me a bit if many Japanese-Americans think it&#039;s a good thing.
Gung Ho!
After the War the American CIA secretly supported the right wing political party in Japan. With cash. <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/1994..." target="_blank">" rel="nofollow noopener" title="http://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/09/world/cia-spent...">http://www.nytimes.com/1994...
