I agree with your assessment of California rules. They never should have bowed to the fundies. Homeschooling, IMHO, is nothing more than a way for evangelical Christians to stifle critical thinking in their progeny. They discovered years ago that the public school system was fostering a mentality that encourages children to question. When children question, they tend to come to their own conclusions sooner or later. Conclusions that may not square with their parents beliefs. This leads to a serious loss of sheep for the churches which in turn diminishes the church community not just in numbers but in money. And, it is the money that drives this. This is my opinion based on my own personal experiences. This is why we see the outright attacks on higher education today as bastions of "liberal thought". It is no accident that in research we find liberals with higher education. Critical thinking is anathema to evangelicals. Literal interpretation of the bible will never square with science and fact. Magical thinking. I believe that any home-schooled children should have to meet the same educational guidelines as any other student and to be overseen by the local district with regular testing and must pass the same test as any other student to move forward. Any signs of abuse will be much harder to hide with constant supervision.
