Regarding BDS: here is a partial list of things that came from/come from Israel, so BDS supporters can stop using them and show their commitment:

Waze - a popular mapping program.

Pillcam - capsule endoscopy.

Netafim (and all variations) - smartdrip, drip, & micro irrigation systems, and any produce grown with it.

Cherry tomatoes.

Epilady (and all variations) - the first electric hair remover.

MobileEye - the lane changing and collision warning system used in cars.

GPS systems.

Intel microchips resulting from the 8088 processor (all of them).

Anything printed with HPs Indigo Digital Printing.

Any hospitals using EarlySense for patient vital monitoring.

Copaxone - medication for Multiple Scelrosis.

USB Flash Drives.

Instant messaging (ICQ was developed in Israel).

Any cell phone smaller than a brick.

Sambucol - OTC anti-viral from Elderberries.

Babysense - helps prevent crib death.

Emergency Bandage - used to stop traumatic wound bleeding.

Any operating system derived from Windows NT and XP.

Computer firewalls.

Amazon Kindle.

Iphones, MacBooks and Ipads using Anobit.

By refusing to use any of these products, you are showing the world your sincerity. Note this is only a partial listing, but it is a good start.

The problem is that AIPAC donated millions to the winner, when clearly it should not be legal for any foreign government to back U.S. political candidates. The U.S. is not a satellite country of Israel.

As someone in the district who was very much in favor of the winner of this primary, I have to say the national news about it was sometimes weird. Yes, many people in the district were upset at our former Representative's votes and stances on Israel in general and the Hamas/Israel war specifically - but they were also upset at his vote against the Infrastructure Act, his pulling the fire alarm in Congress, his fights with MTG on the steps of the Capitol, his conspiracy theories, and so many more issues. At the end of the day though, he was out of step with the electorate - which he showed by saying he had left the DSA, and then in the last days of the campaign when he re-joined the DSA telling them he never "really" left. Our very popular County Executive ran a good campaign and listened more than he talked.

I think "a warmongering foreign lobbyist group" is accurate regardless. It's what they do. It's all they do. Latimer should have refused their money.

Suki van Dijk's avatar

Support of Israel by Americans (first letter of AIPAC) is not “foreign.” The money donated to Latimer through AIPAC was mostly from people in district who chose to donate to the campaign through that portal to make their point about why. I think we’d all love real campaign finance reform but until that happens most people running for Congress are going to continue to accept money from AIPAc and other PACs.

OK - more substantive - is HRC knows the district both people running and thought one would be the better Representative. Worth noting that the Dem Congressional candidate in the district immediately north also endorsed George, as did 11 of the 12 Dem committees in the district (the 12th declined to endorse anyone). In the district immediately to the south of us, that Representative all but endorsed George.

Yeah, I don't give a fuck what Josh Marshall says, it is not "okay" when a deep pocket PAC that only EXISTS to advocate for a foreign government buys an election. That Bowman's positions made it possible to buy the election does not make it acceptable. Would Marshall be making excuses for a pro-Putin or pro-China PAC?

Expand full comment
"M"'s avatar

Nobody needs to be listening to Josh Marshall on a day like this or an issue like this.

For one thing, he's not closest to the pain.

People should be listening to Wajahat Ali

"Regardless of your opinion on Bowman, you shouldn't celebrate an interest group, in this case AIPAC and its big donors, spending a historic $14.5 million in a primary race. Probably not the best thing for democracy."

https://x.com/WajahatAli/status/1805772909136560644

and to Elie Mystal, who, in addition to being a double-Harvard-educated attorney and the Justice Correspondent for The Nation, also happens to be a constituent

"In any event, I think if our district is going to be the most expensive district to run in, in the country, then we should at least come out of it with a Congressperson who is going to be a leader instead of a warmed-over career politician placeholder."

https://x.com/ElieNYC/status/1806027926594375894

... which Josh Marshall is not

And if he is, he should be grilled about what plans he has to correct Latimer's historically abysmal RECORD of slowing desgregation in Westchester County down to a crawl

So we can all get this out in the open right now

Expand full comment
Ward From Cali's avatar

You mention Westchester county, which really gets to the (other) heart of this. The Bronx and Westchester county suburbs really have no business being lumped together in the same district.

"The Rethug agenda in Mein Kampf '25 makes party discipline a necessity not an option."

I don't want to hear that kind of gaslighting. Nobody with any kind of integrity (oh, the irony) does, right now.

I'm quite tired of hearing that "party unity" nonsense when there could have been "party unity" for the incumbent

Especially when Latimer has an ALREADY ESTABLISHED ABYSMAL RECORD on desegregation in Westchester County as a county executive

What you're basically saying in light of Latimer's ALREADY ESTABLISHED ABYSMAL RECORD on desegregation is "wait for justice"

And James Baldwin said THIS 60 years ago -- so I don't imagine you have a single credible reason why a "wait for justice" message is timely now

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK2KrJTsZ2k

And if you're planning on screeching some nonsense about "MERITOCRACYYYYYYY" today is really not the day for that slop either

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bil1vAJcEZo

The people who actually made Mein Kampf possible were the "good Germans" who TURNED THEIR HEADS WHILE SEGREGATION TENDING TOWARDS GENOCIDE WAS BEING IMPLEMENTED IN REAL TIMIE.

So maybe think about Mein Kampf THAT way next time before you roll it out for some excuse to justify another call of "get behind the bigoted White man"
