Uhm, everyone and their uncle that isn't a millionaire is actually economically anxious. Marx wrote about the suffering of the proletariat, but nowadays the biggest economic class is the precariat: Those who don't know if they can pay rent the next two months.

yeah.

But in this context, it is the excuse they keep giving for voting for Trump (or more lately, for becoming fascist).

And it is utter horseshit.

I think it is a small part of it, they are actually economically insecure. That doesn't excuse it, but it does explain it. It is a core piece of coding in apes: IF scared THEN find the loudest chimp and follow them.

The bill is rumored to include virtually everything the GOP asked for, including billions for thousands more border patrol and administrative jobs. It’s a massive immigration bill, and Biden should publicly declare that “if Republicans tank this landmark immigration bill to score points for Trump by keeping our border understaffed, the next version of this bill will be OUR version, when my second term begins. If Republicans think they get this version after I’m reelected, they are mistaken.” Consequences, wingnards.

"[A]re we, as Republicans, going to have press conferences and complain the border’s bad and then intentionally leave it open after the worst month in American history in December? Now we’ve got to actually determine, are we going to just complain about things?"

That would be a resounding "YES!"

You know what makes me mad- there are Republicans out there saying Biden should just sign some executive orders to fix immigration, like their anti-immigrant groups won't be lining up to sue (just like they did to Obama).

Expand full comment
Maybe's avatar

What makes me even madder is all the people demanding that Biden end the war in Israel or at least declare a cease fire. Biden has no authority and the right-wing government of Israel over the past few decades will not compromise on anything. They still haven't dealt with murderous Israeli settlers. Biden took a stand on that. It's mostly a token, but that and behind-the-scenes pressure is all he can do about Israel.

Ironically, I think Netanyahu and his cronies have harmed Israel far more than Hamas ever did by proving that both sides are brutal, cold-blooded killers of civilians. Younger people in particular are getting a whole new image of Israel and it's an ugly one.

I support Israel's right to exist, but that's not what's happening. I also support the right of civilians in both countries to not be slaughtered.

I wish the "supporters of Palestine" here in the USA would understand your concise statement: "Biden has no authority and the right-wing government of Israel over the past few decades will not compromise on anything."

Did R Senator James Lankford mistakenly wake up a Democrat?? Republicans don’t want to fix shit, they want to break shit!!

Jamie, the only thing you have that Republicans want is white supremacy baby.

But seriously, we could fix the illegal immigration issue overnight if conservative voters actually wanted to fix it, versus just bitch about it.

The fix is simple, legalize them, all of them. Hand citizenship out at the border. No one deserve free stuff, and that includes welfare benefits, which illegal immigrants don’t receive anyway. So, get them on our tax rolls.

The labor market is simple supply and demand. And I’m not picking tomatoes in the hot California sun for minimum wage, if someone else wants to do that job, god bless them.

Precisely. That's the Louis XIV policy: If you live in France, you're French.

RE: the likes of Lankford....

Must be a shock when you finally realize that everything them libz say about your party being uninterested in governing is actually true.

But, like most of the Republicans that realized it before him, will forget about it and continue on as if nothing happened.

Didja catch the MSNBC video where a bunch of MAGAs tried to recreate the trucker convoy and head to the border to "catch" all the migrants streaming over like that scene in World War Z?

Guess what they found when they finally got there?

Why, not a goddamned thing! They were shocked, SHOCKED to learn that they've been lied to all this time! And of course now they're causing a huge problem merely with their presence.

I don't want to get too crazy here, but I feel like Dark Brandon is playing them again. Rethugs are going to kill this bill, kill all the things they've been screaming for, and the Democratic attack ads will write themselves for the Fall. Dark Brandon called their bluff, and it turn out they really were only bluffing.

And I'm going to say this here, only because Dark Brandon is wily and unpredictable, and I want it on the record in case it happens. What if Dark Brandon's October surprise is some kind of negotiated and potentially durable peace in the Middle East? Not saying it will happen, or that I know shit about anything, but that thought woke me up the other morning, and if anyone can do it, Dark Brandon can.

There will be no peace in the middle east while Netanyahu and his ultra-hard-right masters are alive. Same problem on the other side, really. Peace is not in their personal/power-grubbing interests.

Agreed. The only significant difference between Hamas and Netanyahu and his cronies is that Netanyahu has far more effective weapons. Both sides are led by cold-blooded killers of innocents.

“Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma continues to sincerely believe that Republicans want legislation to address the Kafka-esque nightmare that is American immigration policy, particularly with regards to migrants trying to cross the southern border.”

House Republicans have torpedoed every single attempt at immigration reform, since Bush, Jr.’s proposal in 2006. Including bills that passed the Senate with bipartisan support.

I think whatever they support will be based on whatever xenophobic wet dreams roll around Stephen Miller’s head, when a Republican is president again.
