Also too, he would get a Thorazine and a 911 call for a 5150 from this pharmacist. I would need the Zofran.

I mean I would take more 1990s Sorbo…I did enjoy me some ridiculous Hercules shows. Especially when combined with Xena WP. Before our Kev became (or acknowledged being) a total nutjob.

Xena was still the better (and hotter) show. I've been thinking about tracking down episodes and giving it a rewatch.

I’ll take the views of George Carlin, George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut and Carl Sagan over yet another Christian prophet making money off scamming people through fear of β€œthem” being demons and yet another return of a savior.

Nobody's perfect, but it was shocking to me to go back and listen to Carlin famously tell people he never voted, and they shouldn't either.

Steinbeck, too: 'β€œI says, β€˜Maybe it ain't a sin. Maybe it's just the way folks is. Maybe we been whippin’ the hell out of ourselves for nothin’.’…Before I knowed it, I was sayin’ out loud, β€˜The hell with it! There ain’t no sin and there ain’t no virtue. There’s just stuff people do. It’s all part of the same thing. And some of the things folks do is nice, and some ain’t nice, but that's as far as any man got a right to say.’”' ~ Preacher Jim Casy, "The Grapes of Wrath"

I'm just starting a re-read of Norman Cohn's "Europe's Inner Demons: The Demonization of Christians in Medieval Christendom" and the initial chapters deals extensively with how early Christians were demonised by the majority (roman / greek) religions, and later how Christians grew big enough to develop their own demons. One Christian scholar explaining that there were so many demons (non-corporal) surrounding regular folks that sometimes the demons would entirely cover people, with no air hole left to breathe through.

So, not a lot of progress in 1300 or so years since then...

Even appearing with a person of deranged views should disqualify Vance from holding any office. These people just can't get it through their heads that we don't want to live according to their strange (and sometimes menacing) notions about religion. There are two basic ideas about what government is for. The first, reasonable, one says gov. should help people live well and safely without bullying them (lib. democracy); the second one runs, "We won, and you're going to believe and do as we tell you--it's for your own good." This latter is obviously tyrannical, yet millions of Americans seem to have fallen in love with it in recent decades.

Differing views dismay and frighten them; if EVERYBODY and anybody can deviate from the ONE TRUE WAY, maybe they aren't so damned right about everything after all. Besides, look at what the Old Testament says about a people turning away from their god- he gets pissed off and smites them, the genocidal old fucker, and his aim isn't so good. The kind of "wickedness" they want to suppress is what irked Him so much that he drowned nearly everybody. Was everyone else, including babies, dogs, cats and wombats so very reprehensible that they deserved the death penalty? What if He is still up there, getting madder and madder?

"The first, reasonable, one says gov. should help people live well and safely without bullying them (lib. democracy)..."

Can't you see that this oppresses Christians? Part of their faith is shoving it on others, if you inhibit that you are destroying their ability to worship.

Someone is going to be unhappy. I am OK with its being them.

simpledinosaur's avatar

Of course. This is only the case, though, from their warped perspective. Example: they think the First Amendment means they get to say whatever they like AND that you have gravely injured their rights if you don't agree with them. But of course that's insane. The critical point is that we really haven't told them they can't think and say what they wish, it's just that we don't agree to believe it ourselves, or accept their orders regarding our personal conduct.

Exactly

Same for β€œreligion”. It should be that religion helps YOU to be more connected to your inner good essence, not an unelected government.

Robyn is spot-on right about Jezebel. Also, she and her husband King Ahab got the bad press in the Bible because they ruled in the northern kingdom, Israel, while the relevant holy books were written by the Jerusalem priesthood in the southern kingdom, Judah, Israel's rival (and the kingdom that survived). The murder of Jezebel (flung from a high window for dogs to eat) and slaughter of her children wasn't the judgement of God. It was a straight power grab and dynastic purge by Jehu, who appears on the Bible's own showing to have been a right bastard himself.

As for Cyrus the Great being God's instrument when he conquered Babylon and allowed the Jews who'd kept their identity and religion to go home and rebuild, his reward for that was pretty shabby. When he campaigned against the wild nomads beyond the Oxus, he got trounced, according to the story, and Queen Tomyris had his severed head dunked in a cauldron of blood, saying fiercely, "Bloodthirsty as thou art, I will give thee thy fill!"

Another one of these demonic women, I guess. But God, who is all-powerful (says so there on the label) had a funny way of showing Cyrus his appreciation, in that case.

I'm rather fond of Tomyris. After her husband the king died, Cyrus figured he could acquire her kingdom by marrying her. She said "fuck that shit" and observed that she rather liked being queen. So Cyrus pulled some sneaky shit that resulted in her son dying. That's when she declared war and killed him, the dirty old man. .

Tomyris was recently named the national heroine of Kazakhstan. Good.
