I think the John Birch Society was active during Eisenhower's days, and they were total nuts, but back then the GOP knew they needed to kick the nuts out of the party in order to get elected. Don't forget that Ike's stchick was to modernize the GOP, I.e., to drag the party into the 20th Century, which was a thing in the 50's. It was important to have rational Republicans cuz in some places. Like Kansas, only Republicans could get elected. Ike did spawn some decent Republicans down ticket.

It's incredible that so many people have such poor memories to believe Jeb's comment about GW. Last week before the debate, pundits were discussing the September 11th attacks and several made the comment that GW thwarted all future possible terrorist attacks. So like, kudos to GW!
