They're pretend people, but they are pretending to be real people that we know, and that to some degree we may be ourselves. Or our family and friends.

I hate the way political elites have completely forgotten how to even pretend to respect the blue collar poor.

I once had an argument with a Jewish friend about guilt - I think it was a draw (I once thought I was Catholic).

Obligatory factoid: the pope is not Catholic, the Catholic guy is bishop of Rome, chief pastor of the worldwide Catholic Church, and head of state or sovereign of the Vatican City State. There is some gnostic dude in Africa who has 'Pope' as his official title.
