Movie star lifestyle guru Gwyneth Paltrow has taken up the SNAP challenge -- to eat only what she can afford on the $29 a week, on average, that people on food stamps receive. Did you know the Internet is VERY MAD about this? How dare this privileged princess make a mockery of hunger advocacy blah blah yortle blerp? HOW DARE YOU GWYNETH PALTROW????
I'm going to avoid the debate about whether a rich person's attempt to publicize a poor-person issue is more likely to change minds positively or to harden negative attitudes. Because the expressed positions all rely fundamentally on belief about the expected outcome, and I'll admit that I don't know. If anyone has any links to actual science analyzing the impact of celebrity endorsement on social issues, I'd be interested to see them. So far, my google-fu has proven weak.
However, since this is Wonkette, I must give props to whoever did the alt-text.
I did the challenge twice - once with my community(some local politicians and activists and regular people) and once with my synagogue. What you learn is you get hungry and tired and bored with the food you can afford on SNAP(and I had more than her-but maybe not so healthy). I did have fruit and some veggies and tuna and eggs and jam and lentils and split peas. Cheap coffee(you can get coffee packs for $1- 7 "tubes") and cheap tea too.
And she was out with Jon Favreau at some pop up swank restaurant the other night. Go look at his FB page. Did she not eat?
Why do you know this?
How can you go around yelling at people for caring too much about Paltrow when you apparently know where she is at a given point last week and have done the math of her caloric intake? Do you not see how much effort you've voluntarily put into hating this woman? Why?
It got news when Congress members did it (all Dems). But they already know how crappy the system is. Supposedly some GOP guy ate McDonald's dollar menu(which you can't do with SNAP- of course) and said he was fine
Agreed, 100%. The amount of wastage is inexcusable IMO, and as you say, the high-end organic places can be the worst offenders. The whole 'organic' things weirds me out anyway. Okay, you put a big 'organic' sign over your bananas, and you charge twice as much for them, but does that mean the bananas I buy are INorganic? Have I been eating plastic fruit all this time?
Nap time?
God bless her. What the Republicans are doing to the poor is genocide. May they burn in Hell for it.
She boned my old man??!!!
Gwyneth Paltrow is a time-traveling hooker??
(Which hopefully won't be too much longer...) Shypixel?? SHYPIXEL?/??!1!!???
Maybe we should try and convince some famous rich beautiful Republican actor to take the challenge. Oh wait, there aren't any...
That escalated quickly.

Which has WHAT to do with her effort to do something good?
Which has what to do with the issue of funding FOOD BANKS? Look at the point she was trying to make, stop judging her for her food choices...
In Ca, you can use EBT cards at fast food restaurants. It's pretty sad.
'Bout time someone tells it like it is.
If you look at her tweet, reproduced here, it seems like she was talking about the ridiculously small quantity.
Paying attention to what? Her instagram? Why not ignore her???? To hard??
Well, obviously you're not ignoring her.
