Also too! I always recommend Dave Roberts's Volts podcast as a way to ward off climate depression/ennui/cynicism, and here's another episode that does just that: Does growing energy demand mean we need more fossil gas plants? Hell no it does not!

What will help is shutting down the cryptocurrency madness.

And LLMs. AI uses huge amounts of energy for little value while violating copyrights.

But since neither is likely, at least make sure we're adding CLEAN new generation power for peak operations (the only place where a crunch is likely, as the pod guests discuss).

Me, a nerd? Maybe a bit.

I have high hopes that the NYT prevails over OpenAI. The Biden admin has the right idea with grid expansion and resiliency projects and terrific investment tax credits in the IRA. The design of the IRA is brilliant.

As an accountant, I would like to see the carbon offset bullshit disappear. It is smoke and mirrors and deception. They make sense for direct investments but allowing purchasing offsets on unregulated markets is just stupid.

The new EU greenwashing rules do not allow offsetting. We need a similar rule in the US.

Coordinated Inter Agency Transmission Authorization and Permits (CIATAP) - now there's an unfortunate acronym for the conspiracy minded...

How Biden is not leading by 45 points is beyond my ken. WTAF is wrong with people?!?

I assume the failed state of Texas, which insist on having its own power grid, will do nothing and continue to be plagued by failures (no, I'm not talking about Ted Cruz . . . well, I guess I am) anytime the tempature goes below 50 or above 72 degrees?

I'm not a NEPA nerd, but for 17years I worked directly with NEPA nerds, and this gave my heart a little boost. And a transmission line crossed my desk yesterday (in Nevada) on it's way to the NEPA nerds.

Big power transmission lines use aluminum wires for weight savings, not transmission efficiency. I am curious as to how higher efficiency wires will work.

Whale Chowder's avatar

There's a Volts podcast that goes into some detail about how it works but the gist is that weight bearing is handled by a different alloy (plus carbon fiber?) that prevents the thermal expansion of the material so the wires can carry double the electricity for the same amount of sag.

Better living through metallurgy. Better than lithurgy. Them lithurgy batteries are crap.

Love him or hate him you still HAVE to give Joe Biden credit for always seeking out THE most up to date, knowledgeable and connected individuals and/or agencies to do what they do best and get these various integral cogs and wheels turning forward for the sake of the entire nation.

I am just damned delighted to have my assertion that Joe Biden was going to be a 21st century FDR SO abundantly substantiated.

I’m glad to see that President Biden is pissing on the right people. Hey, Uncle Joe, before you leave for the weekend, go back and take a whizz on those people some more.

The lines couldn't be more starkly drawn. We need some upgrades here in Congress for sure. And of course expect judicial fuckery.

Let's keep going and remember this in the fall! We're fighting for the future; the Republicans and the wealthy are fighting for the right to poison us and profit from it.

oscarphile's avatar

The Republicans and the wealthy are fighting for people they dislike not to exist. Every hour brings new evidence that's not an overstatement.

The office building on the corner put up a giant solar panel that tilts and spins to follow the sun. It has two cords for charging cars. It is free to use for anybody. No power lines needed

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm announced a new office in the DOE that will streamline the permitting process for new transmission lines in a new “Coordinated Interagency Transmission Authorization and Permits program,”

A program the orange shitgibbon would kill immediately if he were to take office again. Just ANOTHER reason to vote for OHJB.

Also, Fuck Joe Manchin AND his boat.
