Just a thought: Éamon de Valera, famous in Irish History for quite a number of things, "retired into" the Presidency. He had been condemned to death by the Brits for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising but spared because, among other things, he was an American citizen. He died in 1975 at the age of 93. It was thought toward the end that he might indeed have been too old for the Presidency (which is not a position of much power in Éire).
I continue to be amazed at the sheer size of the double standard in the press applied to the Republican and Democratic parties.
72 hours now of non-stop breathless bedwetting about Biden’s poor debate performance while Trump, a convicted felon, who’d be facing 2 or 3 other convictions right now if conservatives weren’t shitting all over the rule of law to delay those trials, he’s just sitting there going “yeah press, I’m a traitor, whatcha gonna do about it?”.
🤦♂️
And it’s not just the press that play this double standard, it’s us, it’s Democratic voters.
I’m so sick of how my fellow Dems have to “fall in looooooove 😍😍with their candidates in order to vote for them”, like “oh my god, I need Biden to make me feel like Bernie did, with hugs and free puppies and butterfly kisses and while you’re at it, will you play with my butthole too?? Why won’t you play with my butthole? I can’t vote for you if you don’t make me tingle!! AND WHERE’S MY FREE FUCKING PUPPY!!!!”.
Meanwhile Republican voters are over there like “sure, ok, so he’s raping my daughter but he’s a Republican, a Navy Seal, loves America and I just gotta vote Bible”.
Yeah. It does us zero good. There's bad actors insisting nobody should vote, and yet when pressed, can't say they're Americans or that they're not getting paid. They just switch to ad hominem insults.
This was written by my sister, and I wanted to share it here:
I saw Dr. Jill Biden walk up onto a platform, Joe in step behind her.
Jill extended her hand to shake the hand of the lady at the podium. “The Bidens attended a Watch Party in Atlanta following that evening’s debate,” the newscaster read.
The debate had left me suffering through difficult moments along with President Biden.
Seeing Biden, and his wife in attendance immediately following the event, the debate, coming to greet their supporters, I felt the strong, patriotic emotions that had led Key to write: “our flag was still there.”
Joe Biden is valiant. I watched him take to a different stage the next day and give a speech. Blaming no one or anything, finding fault only within himself for the previous night’s disappointment, I marveled at his presence, his tenacity, and his courage. And I felt gratitude in witness to his standing there.
Has no one here ever seen someone who got a solo in a choir/choral piece and get slight laryngitis before the performance, and then lots of people wondered why in the world they were ever picked for a solo part? Somehow no one realized that they obviously are sick and aren't singing like they do 98% of the time.
If I remember well, the main lesson of the five stages of grief is that you'll fall sick if you don't move past the denial stage.
Thursday evening was not a nightmare that will fade away. It's as real as that Titanic iceberg. What you need are solutions, fast. Would a Harris-Buttigieg ticket lose more ignominiously than Good Old Joe will in November ?
Seriously. Those came from someone observing the experiences of cancer patients with a terminal diagnosis. This observation became the Stages of Grief that people pretend are laws or rules, or The Proper Way to Grieve Correctly. The woman who did the work is still talking about how it has been warped into this thing it never was.
While yes, it's bad to be in denial. The point I was making is that there is no denial "stage" that was invented by people who didn't understand the work.
It should fade away, though. He had a cold, and he had mild laryngitis. One can really feel like crap, especially in the evening, with a cold or mild flu-like virus, especially in the evening. I'm decades younger than Biden, and I usually had a cup of tea with honey and turn in early, not go out and give a speech. Trump just lied stupidly and hatefully the whole time, pulled his usually "Gish Gallup" technique, claiming Biden is letting in hordes of rapists and murderers that Trump was stopping. Completely false. Immigration numbers were going up under Trump, the numbers continued to rise under Biden. They rise because people's lives are at stake due to conditions the U.S. had a hand in creating. And Kamala Harris made efforts, very appreciated by the leaders, to speak with the leaders of countries to our South about what they needed from us. The leader of Guatemala, in particular, asked her to tell people "don't come to the U.S." because coyotes were telling people the borders were open now that Biden was in office (not at all true at that time, Covid restrictions had not been lifted), and people were giving them all their money only to get stopped at the border, sent back, or making terribly dangerous, illegal crossings. So Harris sent them the "Don't come" message and was attacked by the left, without understanding the reasons she gave the message. I've meandered, but Biden and Harris both are unpopular for many unfair reasons.
Ta, Rebecca. I don't need to watch. I'm voting Biden-Harris just like I did four years ago, and nothing is going to change my mind about that. I voted Dan Goldman in the primary, too.
Within 10 minutes of watching the debate I did a face palm. I continued in a face palm through the 2 hours of Rachel Maddow's debrief -- the part when they were being honest and a bit outraged, and the part where there started looking at the bright spots -- still in a face palm, and that's how I feel asleep. In the a.m. my Wonkette posted a video of OHJB at a post-debacle rally yelling, smiling, and shaking his fist. So I don't know what to think. Except this. Most of the rest of the people do know what to think, which is that the guy is in bad shape. You can't unsee that. Maybe he's still competent to do the job but...I doubt it now. Because the job is to be able to look Trump in the face and respond to his bullshit. The Californian surrogates came on and had so much more energy and clarity. The contrast made Joe look even worse.
My theory is that, age aside -- seeing this in the 2020 debates and again last night -- is the Trump actually intimidates OHJB. Yelling, berating, fast fire lies and BS, the sheet energy of Trump flummoxes OHJB. He can't think that fast and the old stutter comes back. And fundamentally Trumpish boorish, bullying, rude manners stump, Joe, who is a 20th century style gentleman. He's constantly outraged, "The idea that....is ridiculous." And "...#1. #2..." and he never gets past 2.
I'm hoping he's a Lyndon Johnson but I thinking he's an RBG.
Well, enough of serious. Time to get to work on my safe room.
It’s beneath the dignity of President Biden, and democracy, that he had to share a debate stage with that hateful, stupid, lazy, lying criminal thug.
We don’t need any debates. The choice, to paraphrase David Sedaris, is between a plate of chicken and a plate of shit with broken glass in it. The right question is NOT, how is the chicken prepared?
Biden should live and be well and take good care of himself and stay nice and healthy but I would vote for him if he was in a literal coma and hooked up to every machine known to man. Hell, I’d vote for a lifeless corpse over PAB. If you haven’t made your mind up yet, let’s be honest, you have. I can only pray last night’s farce didn’t inflict any permanent damage.
Oh, by the way, the next time I hear from someone of the professorial class about how disenchanted their students are by the wobbly geezer, and how some of them are fleeing to the manly arms of RFK Jr, and that's why we need....I don't fucking know, "a friendly Labradoodle" as Wonkette previously jested...I'm going to scream like a fucking steam whistle. DUDE/LADY, they're YOUR students, and if you cannot explain to them the importance of this moment...and ANOTHER thing, kids vote by mood and geezers vote by habit and by learned, painful experience. They know where Gaza is....do they know where their genitals are, and why the Republicans have such an unholy interest in them?
Wow! That was the Joe we know and love. He can only win if we support him. Some people who are supposedly on our side are busy digging a grave. I for one will never abandon one of the best presidents to ever bless this country. DJT is an unbelievably awful, evil man. His supporters are too. Doomsayers on our side of the fence need to get a fucking grip and act like we want to save democracy, damnit!!
So apparently according to right wing media he was dead.
And then three days later ...
He is the most Catholic human on the planet.
Treason Trump once famously said that he could shoot anyone in the middle of 5th Ave and not lose a single supporter.
He has now proven that: He could be shot in the middle of a PA rally and still not gain a single sympathizer.

81 too old? Malarky!

Ugh…we are so committed to destroying ourselves.
I despair at the way he was treated.
I mean, what the fuck Obama?
I also rejoice at hope in Harris.
It is complicated but I hope we make it.
Yeah. It does us zero good. There's bad actors insisting nobody should vote, and yet when pressed, can't say they're Americans or that they're not getting paid. They just switch to ad hominem insults.
What's that saying?
Republicans fall in line; Democrats fall in love.
We are our own worst enemy.
Here's an editorial to peruse.
To serve his country, Donald Trump should leave the race | Editorial
Biden had a horrible night Thursday. But the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump.

I'd like to see a debate where a buzzer and a big red X goes up on the screen at every bald-faced lie said, just like the one on Family Feud.
Save time. Paint or better yet tattoo the red X on Don Don's face.

Why DID he eat shit so hard the other night? Was he needing a nap? What were his advisors doing in the prep? Just Asking Questions here!!!

Why are you focused on one event held, while sick, while ignoring four years of accomplishment and achievement?
You're not "just" asking questions.
Bottom line for me...
I'd rather have a President who's honest and experienced than
a President who's a fucking sociopath interested only in what winning will do for him.
That's you. But optics matter in 'Merika.
What is said matters too, and if Trump said one thing that wasn't a lie, I didn't hear it.
That smile! 😍
Me too, it's dazzling.

It's still dangerously unhealthy to stay stuck in the denial stage.

Thanks. I couldn't possibly appreciate that more! big smiley face
If only he'd closed last night with what he said starting at ~ 25 min up there.
