No, because people do not take seriously the effect of big money lobbying on our legislators. Health, Automotive/ Climate Change, Wall Street/ Mortgage collapse.Citizens United.

I grew up in Michigan, and my parents were both journalists. My mother in particular was acquainted with Rep Dingell, since she spent a fair amount of time on the metro desk, and she never had a bad word to say about the man. It's fair to say he wasn't always a progressive, but he was always no-bullshit, he was always polite, and he always had a lot of humor. He'll definitely be missed.

Dingell may have been overly fond of the auto industry, but remember, he was elected to a district adjoining Detroit Michigan. As such, he had a responsibility to protect as many jobs as he could. You don't see Representatives cities like San Diego, Seattle, or Norfolk Va. Calling for cuts in military spending or restrictions on contractors.

Once again, you run into the problem of the interest of your district and getting re-elected versus advocating for the national interest and losing the election to someone much worse.

Actually, Kurt Vonnegut didn’t say that. His son, Mark Vonnegut, a fine author himself, said that in a letter to his father, who quoted that statement in one of his collections of essays and speeches. (One of which was made just before I went up on stage to collect my Ph.D. How about that.)

This is a beautifully written and fitting tribute to a good old-fashioned leftist. Thank you.

In all fairness, I once posted on FB a picture of an A1 Steak Sauce bottle that had the word "awesome" printed up the side, commenting "Maybe it's time we stopped using this word."

Full disclosure: I love A1, especially the Green Chile flavor.

British conservatives keep trying to undermine/part-privatise the NHS - they would never dare actually abolish it.
