My kid is still cooking for three more months, but when they are old enough to go to school I feel like "my taxes pay for everyone to have free lunch" is going to be cheaper and easier than "I have to pack this child a lunch every single dang morning, I don't even have the capacity to pack my own self a lunch."
“Colorado voters approved Prop FF -- known as ‘Healthy School Meals for All’-- last fall. The free lunches are funded with fewer tax deductions for high-income earners in our state,”(passed by 55%)
We did it by referendum and democracy! A federal program would make even more sense!
When I think of how much better and more valuable this man is than all the assholes who are slagging him about his health and his attire put together...
damn, every SINGLE story I hear about this dude I fall more in love.
Hypothesis (working): humans who see the possible end and that there is no way faustian way out, you see the world clearer. What matters most. You see this in hospice patients or those who faced said hospice scenario and rolled the cosmic dice for another go. You TRULY understand the price of existance.
Some may run away from the pain & forget but others, it changes us fundamentally. We can't UNSEE what existence is all about and how short a time we get to do so and how fragile ALL of this is.
It appears that Mr Fetterman saw that light/dark and walked away changed for the better. He knows the true value of EACH day and words don't really matter, but the actions AND the intentions behind said actions. Founded in love, you will succeed. BE the hope you need to see (like Mr. Fetterman). Love his living example for others to extrapolate in other situations.
Anyhoo, love all you wonkette peeps. You are my hope and so grateful to you all when my darkness approaches. You give me a lifeline to hold on to. Thank you.
I recently read about Fetterman's wife living with him through their marriage and recent treatment. She said he was always so sad, and didn't know why. I hope the treatment helped and his depression has lifted a lot, if not entirely. She's pretty amazing herself.
the sadness, methinks (not sure in his case, but mine) is you KNOW what is important. You SEE it. Yet others so willingly hurt others. When you feel like utter shit (and facing that dark door no one returns) it's hard to block out all the hate of humanity. It DOES take peeps who love you (as it appears she did) to keep you from letting the pain drown all your light. Those who stick with you in the darkness. You REMEMBER, KWIM?
May we all find our peep(s) in this life to pull is to safety when the world and our existence gets too dark.
We still have a lot left to learn about the effects of major medical trauma upon psychological moods.
At least post-partum depression is now recognized as an actual condition and some ways have been found to relieve it.
The only times that I have been seriously depressed have been after the deaths of loved ones and after one nightmarish romantic breakup.
With one exception: I started taking a statin drug for borderline-high cholesterol and bang, I wanted to jump off a bridge. It took me longer than it should have to figure out the connection and find the PDF article that identified depression as a known side effect (the last in a loooooong list of dire effects in teeny-tiny print.)
What was that drug? The most common one: Lipitor.
I take Lipitor for my moderate to severe optimism and now I'm suicidal. Thanks, Lipitor!
The Farxiga ads tell how great it is, then rattle off the possible side-effects, and buried in there is that your taint might rot until you die-- wait, what?
the medical community and science in general is still going off the assumption that mankind knows everything...now. Yet time and time again, so many forget ALL the ways the body is interconnected. You pull on on thread and may indeed make 10 other threads worse cuz you didn't fully comprehend how widespread medication can be. Yes you didn't intend to affect brain physiology but ANYTHING that messes with blood chemistry IS going to mess with brain chemistry (hence moods). Body not in homeostasis for a reason (say lipids) but those lipid have great effects on osmotic balance which the body and every cell relies upon to deliver nutrients for everything and glucose to power all that re uptake on the 'feel good' neurotransmitters and hormones.
Anyhoo, sorry about the mini rant, but yeah, so frustrated at MD right now. They SHOULD know better (I mean I had the same forking training, just my body gave out before completion).
Love his whole vibe. He WILL put actions to his words. He wants to make this world better for all and willing to protect those not seen/without a voice. THAT is the way, may we all find our path to help each other. To protect each other. To love each other. To be the healers for each other.
When I was in school, most kids got lunch in the cafeteria line, which was 35 cents, or had those cool lunch boxes with colorful designs or maybe a bag. A few kids went home for lunch. I never heard of anyone not getting lunch, but I was sheltered.
there's another way to address this if the GOP were serious and argued in good faith: living wages. that way one parent would be able to stay home if they so choose and nobody would have to work more than one job if they don't want to.
Just noticed the subheadline here. I'm not sure where Dok Zoom went to school, but I think it's highly likely that they're wrong about that. These issues didn't get attention, and poor kids stopped going to school to work to keep the lights on at home. But lunch debt has been a thing for as long as we've been charging students to eat in a place they're required to be anyway.
During my childhood, I usually brown bagged it, and while I had to eat in the cafeteria, the solution in my school district was cash at the end of the lunch counter line if you partook of it, or you had a meal ticket that got punched. Brownbaggers didn't have to pay, or have an account. When I did eat from the lunch counter, I paid in cash for the meal.
I brown bagged it too, but sometimes I wanted "a treat" and paid for one of those little pizzas out of pocket. Honestly, I didn't even pay attention to students who might be on a program. I hadn't learned the concept of "takers" because the notion never came up around me.

Thank you for a fine post. Happy to be a patron.

Yes, MAGAts, all these schoolchildren are out to rip you off personally because everybody wants something for nothing and no one wants to work anymore
This is a great idea and John Fetterman is a hero, not least for propelling the Western Pennsylvanian term of "jagoff" into the national arena.
Ta, Dok. Yes, bring back the pandemic program and feed ALL the kids.
Frank Herbert wrote at least one book with the war cry of, "We're hungry NOW," iirc.

And he did this serious good while wearing a suit!

Ask your doctor is suicide is right for you.

Beautifully said. Thank you.
I’ve obsessively read Catch-22 and I hope nobody get any ideas and tries to feed kids chocolate-covered cotton.
No, but someone will invent chocolate-covered cotton candy and spike our national collective blood sugar level another few points.
damn! . . . now you've reminded the republicans.
The Alabama school lunch program enters the chat.
Damn, JF looks like he has his "I'm going to kick all your dumb asses (with votes)" suit on. And I hope he does. (with votes)

The actual “pro-life” party, ladies & gents, giving kids food to eat!

My sibs and I lived close to our grade school and the junior high so we went home for lunch. Ma did not think school lunch was cheaper than that.
Took a brownbag packed lunch to the last 2 years at the senior high but ate lunch down in the locker room. I am apparently a life long loner.

We didn’t have lunch debt, we just had hungry.
I don't think I ate lunch in high school. We smoked pot and got an ice cream sammich.
