ββ¦if they just decided to stop being assholes.β I think about that a lot. Pretty much everything bad about society through the ages, aside from natural disasters, has been the result of some people being assholes and not caring that they hurt other people. We could be living in, maybe not a utopia, but at least a world where people are fed and cared for and educated to their capabilities, and given the opportunity for a productive life that benefits themself and everyone else, and allowed to live the life they choose as long as it doesnβt hurt anyone else. But every time it seems like weβre moving that way the assholes return to power, and fuck it up. Absolute proof of the non-existence of any sort of benevolent god.

Iβd say that juxtaposing what WAS with what now IS, actually shows progress. Hell yeah people think slavery is bad and should be reminded that we do not want to go back to that.
But they donβt really want progress. They want to go back to those grand old times.
Censorship meet Streisand Effect. The innertubes and its effects on society are something that Orwell had no way of predicting, and he wasn't trying, to be fair.
100%. Dissected it with brutal precision in Animal Farm. And then, in nineteen eighty-four, his conclusions became a dire warning.
The alleged "prediction"-bit became really marketable in 1984, as I recall, and then became an internet mainstay.
It's the same with SciFi. Take Huxley's Brave New World, for example, which is also an observation and reductio on similar, overlapping themes. It's also constantly being accused of predicting this, that, or the other.
It took until th 1960's for my Northern Virginia hometown to stop putting up confederate flags alongside American flags on holidays. Virginia's magats are melting down over confederacy supporting organizations losing their tax exemptions. What I'd like is to get a full refund, plus interest on every dollar spent by Black Virginians celebrating treason and traitors. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the delicious whine emanating from the treason supporters.
So as they are eliminating people of color are they going to eliminate the use of plasma in hospitals?
Charles Richard Drew (June 3, 1904 β April 1, 1950) was an American surgeon and medical researcher. He researched in the field of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge to developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II. This allowed medics to save thousands of Allied forces' lives during the war.[1] As the most prominent African American in the field, Drew protested against the practice of racial segregation in the donation of blood, as it lacked scientific foundation, and resigned his position with the American Red Cross, which maintained the policy until 1950.[2]
It's like Jefferson claiming all men are created equal while raping the teenage girl he owned as property.
It's insane that people treat the founding fathers like god-kings. At the very best, they were self-interested rich white men who didn't really believe in the equality they claimed to support.
Always kinda wondered how much of it was a kinda practical bargain: put the enlightenment ideals on paper to get some popular support without which you cannot chase away the British anyway (to some degree/for some of them pretty damn sure there was some of that)...
... and how much of it really was no okay this is probably right and some mix of knowing they didnβt really measure up to that themselves but saying it anyway...
... and okay maybe really not seeing it, really believing okay obviously when we say all men are created equal we donβt also mean women and blacks...
I think people do do the former all the time. And I donβt know itβs fair to call it mere hypocrisy. Mean better for the future even as youβre pretty much a letdown in the present.
Ta, Robyn. Assholes they have always been, assholes they remain, and assholes they will be far into the future, and for all time.

Next up, the exhibits at Donner Pass edited to show that it was just a pleasant cross-country skiing trip in beautiful Lake Tahoe.
With free BBQ!
A FEMALE federal judge. That must frost Miller's balls.
Tiny things freeze faster, too.
It probably just confirmed his prejudices, in his mind.

However, I am on board -- fully -- with the empirical and historical erasure of all things Shambles.
Damnatio memoriae for the win.

Censorship meet Streisand Effect. The innertubes and its effects on society are something that Orwell had no way of predicting, and he wasn't trying, to be fair.
Orwell didn't actually "predict". He keenly observed aspects of human behavior, keenly.

nice finishing stroke there Robyn. Truer truths never written.

"Itβs an endless cycle that could stop at any time if they just decided to stop being assholes, but they never will."
"Stop being assholes?? But being assholes is our favorite thing ever!"
Frog, meet scorpion.
"On January 26, the NPS raided The Presidentβs House, which is part of Independence National Historical Park."
The National Park Service...RAIDED...a national park!
Make it make sense, somebody!
Take this brick, and hit yourself in the face.
Better?

"Updated interpretive materials providing a fuller account of the history of slavery at Independence Hall..."
Probably a Stepin Fetchit-era endless loop of happy dorkies learning trades to the tune of "Jump Down, Turn Around, Pick a Bale of Cotton."
How is it disparaging Washington to acknowledge that he owned slaves? He was ok with people knowing he owned slaves.
Pointing out that he was an inhumane asshole who should have known better - maybe I cross into disparagement there. It's a fine line.

Sally Hemings and Jefferson's wife had the same daddy.
