So $288,000 a year in cost to the customer. The aides, using a very generous $12/hr salary, will split $105,000 of that. Out of that split, they will have to buy their own scrubs/uniforms, provide their own transportation, and certain supplies. Also, almost all home care workers hired through an agency are considered Independent Contractors which means no benefits. It also places a tax burden on them as the companies don’t withhold taxes and could prevent them from accessing SSDI and social security benefits at retirement age.

My mom was fortunate enough to die at home in her own bed, surrounded by her kids.

It wouldn't have happened, though, if we didn't have the ability to pay for two home-care CNAs.

Reforms designed to support and compensate long-term home care is a no-brainer and vital need in America. That’s why you can expect Republicans to oppose it. Here in Michigan, for example, we used to have lifetime, unlimited medical care for auto accident victims who need long-term care. The vast majority of those victims receive their care at home, and more than half receive at least some of their care from family members. Anyone, family members included, who provide care must be paid a fair hourly wage for that care. Sadly, the hourly rate most insurers will pay is $12-15 an hour for “unskilled” care (ie not nursing care) and doesn’t include any other benefits at all, even tho it’s taxed as income.

In 2019, Republicans became convinced that families of injury victims were simply being greedy, or defrauding insurers by claiming to care for their loved ones. So, they revamped our No-Fault coverage to limit family care to 56 hours per week, max. Family are free to provide more, but insurers don’t have to pay for it. The rest of the hours must be provided by an outside home-care agency, if the family can find one to staff it. To make matters worse, Republicans slashed reimbursement rates for agency care by 45% of their 2019 billed rate. So many home healthcare agencies just stopped accepting auto injury patients. A 5% or 10% manipulation of the free market would outrage most corporations who enjoy Republican tax cuts. A 45% reduction was designed to force families to care for themselves for free.

Republicans don’t believe in taking care of the sick and injured.

I mean this is great, but did you know Kamala also said she wouldn't change a thing from the Biden administration? That was apparently super damning for the head talkers on The Situation Room today because it allowed her opposition to use it against her.. AAARGGHGGH MAKE IT STOP

We always cared for older family members at home. It's a real chore sometimes but well worth the effort Do it, you won't be sorry. BTW Harris is on Colbert right now. if you don't like what she's saying, there's something wrong with you.

I have an 86 year old mother. She’s still very independent, but a day doesn’t go by when I don’t think about what will happen when she is no longer able to care for herself. Thank you, future President Kamala Harris.

I had finally found another job after being unemployed for three years or so. And then my father, who I cooked and cleaned and drove and managed his bills for, was diagnosed with lung cancer, a slow, insidious type that caused the pleura of his right lung to fill with fluid, which presented as severe shortness of breath. We fucked around with going up to GBMC in Towson every couple of months to have it drained with a needle like a bicycle pump, plus some more imaging to keep an eye on the small tumor which was causing the problem- he was over 90, so surgery was not an option. So, after about a year of this, his oncologist prescribed a short course of high dosage radiation treatment, which meant I had to drive him up to Towson every day for a week. So, I had to quit my job, which was already in danger because I found it difficult to keep focused on what I was supposed to do.

P.S. the radiation worked for a while, and then they gave up and suggested home hospice care. Medicare paid for all his treatment, but the only money coming in was his Social Security ( I was not old enough yet). We were lucky in that I didn't get sick, the cars (his and mine) ran ok even though they were paid off, and the mortgage was manageable for the moment.

Charts? Interesting! Looks good -- great in fact, though more needs to be done to ensure Death in Debt. So, yeah, great! To any follower of Mike Christ...

When my mom went into the nursing home after a stroke left her partially paralyzed, I had to jump through flaming hoops backwards to get her covered by Medicaid. It was only by the grace of a social worker who saw that we didn't have much, decided we needed what little there was more than the gummint, and chose to look the other way that I got her covered. But not before the home *brought her an eviction notice*, because that's what an 89yo who can no longer care for herself needs the most 😠 Somehow, they got sweet as pie once i secured Medicaid with zero help from them.

I hope my kids won't have to go through that when it's my turn to need long-term care, assuming I should live so long (probably; mom made it to 91 and a half).

My kids and two of my grand kids (and a grandson-in-law) have gone out of their way to state, staring me in the eyes, that I will not be going to a nursing home. No ifs.

I have mixed feelings about this. I had my mom in a very nice assisted living facility the last 5 years of her life but it was VERY expensive. I don't have that kind of money (partially because we used mom's income to pay for the ALF-- to my sister and I, it was worth it) and I don't want my kids spending a bunch for me. So I stay home and they care for me... But I don't want to be a burden to them.

This, having Medicare pay for extra help around the house for my old ass would be a perfect solution.

I wish I could give everyone here a hug. I went through the challenges of senior living, hospitalization and hospice with my mother, but I was blessed with five sisters, three of whom shouldered most of the burden. Mom was mentally sharp, agreeable and tough, but it was still an emotional time.

This is such a good idea. To sell it to Republicans, we just have to point out that aging parents will still have some money to leave them if they don’t have to spend it all on in-home health care.

“DEATH TAX!”

Oh, forget selling it to them. We just have to win all the government.

You are probably right. But I was just reading this AM about her connections to to fringe elements of the right wing movement way back like 2 decades ago. It was known but ignored when she was VP candidate. Kind of laid some groundwork for maga taking over the GOP.
