Ta, Dok. Racism, misogyny, sexism, white Xtian nationalism, antisemitism and all other forms of bigotry should be disqualifying for anyone who wants to be elected to ANY office, let alone that of the most powerful office in the world. I love the joy and hope and energy of the Harris-Walz campaign, and I hope they're so successful that there's a blue wave from sea to shining sea that leaves the Rs gobsmacked. Let them melt like the snowflakes they like to say we are. And fuck their feelings.

I can perhaps understand not voting, out of frustration. I'm acquainted with some of those types.

But voting FOR the PAB??? I could make a bunch of incredibly terrible jokes in poor taste about that, but I've got the good sense to refrain from doing so.

I have seen Kamala Harris's sneakers, and they are, of course, cool.

"Also too, we’ll close with a reminder from Nation columnist Elie Mystal that while it’s true that “the difference between 85 percent and 90 percent [of Black votes] could be the difference in Harris winning or losing a critical state or two,” the people who really are causing trouble in this nation are not the few Black voters who may not stick with Democrats, but rather the majority of white men and women who keep supporting Donald Trump:"

I think it’s been shown that disproportionately more white businesses applications are getting SBA loans. The Biden/Harris administration has shown clever and creative and persistent ways to work/overhaul the system to be more fair in several areas. Harris/Walz can demonstrate that the loans are distributed proportionately would be a solid counter-argument

First, I agree that white people are responsible for the mess of our political system, even those of us who abhor the systemic racism and classism. We are the majority of the voting population - at the moment - who hold the leverage to fight and turn the page on fascism and the grossly inequitable distribution of wealth. I also want to address something brought up downthread. I’ve been amazed all my life at the fundamental misunderstanding Americans have about the economy. I have never understood how so much of our country falls for the “raise your taxes” bullshit which the Rethuglicans still use to manipulate us to vote for them and against our best interest. It’s an established fact that when the working poor and middle class are given educational opportunities, the standard of living for the entire country improves. Excellently funded school systems, including colleges, produce quality employees for the workforce; affordable and accessible health care keeps employees healthy; reduced student debt and elder care costs reduces the stress and financial obligations that prevent long term planning /financial investments. Our taxes help build roads and bridges, which companies need to produce or bring their products to market. The top 1 percent, including billionaires, actually benefit more from all these things than lower and middle income members of society. This drives the economy, and allows you to keep your ultra rich status, you stupid, short term focused selfish bastards.

When I was a little kid in the early 60's, we used to sleep overnight at my grandparents who lived in town in Youngstown, Ohio.

Grandpa was a park policeman, and he traveled around to all the parks to collect the time sheets from the machines the patrols checked in on by turning a key they carried to make a manual mark on the sheet in the locked box.

Traveling around the city like that, he saw where all the good Christmas decorations were. When we went in, we all went for a drive around to see all those decorations. Outdoor lighting decorations were fairly new and pretty expensive. The only people who had them were rich people, a lot of bigwigs in the steel industry.

The top tax rate was still 90% at that time, and those fellows with the decorations looked like they were doing pretty damned good.

Thanks for this lovely, evocative memory! In my family, almost all the men in my father's generation came home to Pennsylvania and Ohio after WWII service to get quite good, steady jobs in the steel industry. The post-war industrial boom didn't last their whole working lives, though.

Here's a paper I really enjoyed about earlier steel-industry history - the rise of businessmen as celebrities and changing norms about how they much money they should be paid. https://histecon.fas.harvard.edu/crisis-next/1907/docs/Savarese-Executive_Compensation.pdf

Going to have to disagree with you here. Hillary won the popular vote. The reasons she lost the electoral vote are many, including Manafort giving voter information from swing states to Russia so they could fuck it up. Plenty of misogyny within the Black male community, also, too.

I jumped back to have another peek. This strategery might be worth keeping in mind as we get closer to the end:

"Trump ended up winning Michigan in the final week-and-a-half as the campaign bombarded the state with visits from Trump and his adult children: Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric and Tiffany. Running mate Mike Pence made four campaign appearances in the last five days of the campaign in the socially conservative GOP stronghold of west Michigan."

YES!!! We get so bogged down in our own problems, which I am guilty of as well, that we can’t see the forest for the trees. Only when we contribute to lifting ALL of us up will we truly benefit ourselves and future generations.

This is a good effort in principle but I caution folks to remember, all groups have traitors. After all, there are always people Harriet Tubman would've left behind. And I will say, among Black folk we've been one of the most loyal constituencies towards the Dems.

President Klan Robe marketed himself to certain Black men by allying with shitty gangsta rappers and other misogynistic creeps, and still Democrats *overwhelmingly* voted for Black people.

As the article says though, if Kamala Harris is bested by the fascist ticket, it ain't gonna be the fault of Black people.

Of course Mystal is correct, but I think it’s far more difficult to understand why ANY marginalized people would vote against their interests (or not vote at all). PAB is not in the interest of the majority of straight cis white people either (whether they realize it or not), but we’ll get less of the brunt in a flat-out racist, fascist regime than will the average Black man. So yes, white people bear far more of the blame, but also suffer fewer negative consequences.

Expand full comment

White people vote against their own best interests all the time, especially the working poor and right wing religious groups. The culture of grievance against African Americans, for example, has existed in the South as long as i can remember and I’m old. Rethuglicans have used it for decades to distract and manipulate and establish systemic racism in general.

The FACT of the matter is that Black Americans, male or female, Jewish Americans, female Americans of any ethnicity, Mexican Americans, and LGBTQ Americans who choose to vote for the Deposed Despot are stabbing themselves and all of the aforementioned demographics in the back. In cold blood.

It is time for forward progress and putting Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the White House throws this motor into a fierce first gear.
