One of the biggest blows to NY-based actors was the death of the traditional soap opera. Those suckers could be brutal - you'd get hired for a couple of days, go to costume and be handed a script 20 minutes before your scene, and sometimes not know that there were changes during those 20 minutes you were preparing. Sometimes it was total improv while the cameras were rolling and they almost always only did one take.
