Sigh. Yr Comments Moderator would like to remind you that this is a feminist mommyblog, and comments focused on Noem's looks or whether you personally find her attractive enough to fuck are what we call sexist when applied to anyone else. Please regulate your conduct accordingly

Seems like you missed the whole point of the article. The hell with the plastic, over made up, puppy killer. This is about the illegal deportations of so called gang bangers. And also how they used actual El Salvadoran gang members and pretended it was the people just deported. The Salvadoran gang members have gang tattoos so they pretended it was the deportees. And how they just scoop up people off the street, put them on a plane and disappear them. No hearing, no due process, no warrants, no actual proof that they committed any crime at all. Not even littering. But hell, if trump did it, it must be legal because the Kool-aid drinkers in an alternative dimension think trump can do no wrong, even though they see it with their own eyes or hear it with their own ears. But if it were Biden doing it? You would be screaming for him to be impeached in a NY minute.

We really can't talk about how her CHOICE of that cosmetic surgery looks ridiculous?

It's a physical sign of submission to Trump (I'm convinced by the Marcotte article on Salon the other day about the MAGA cosmetic surgery look).

While I agree, do you see a distinction between commenting on a person’s deliberate choices in hair, clothing and makeup and commenting on natural aspects of their appearance? Amanda Marcotte is one of the feminists who has pointed out the tendency of Trump sycophants to deliberately exaggerate their masculinity or femininity.

I should have looked down. Yes, I agree with you.

Not commenting on someone's natural appearance makes sense.

When you specifically butcher yourself to look like....whatever they think they look like....that seems like a different story.

In the second screenshot, her hands are posed in the bunny hop position. Which would have been funny if after the prop stunt, she hopped away like a bunny.

And I would have lied: "Totally was on my bingo card. I knew she was a hopper."

Can we talk about the idiotic trend of tucking just the front of your shirt into your pants? For some reson I find that stupid, and I'm not even gay.

(Oblig, not that there's anything wrong with that)

Point well taken, Dok. However, there is a valid conversation to be had about the aesthetic of her "look" and the conflation of the erotic and the sadistic. It is deeply disturbing and it runs right down the middle of RW "culture."

Absolutely. That's not the kind of comment I'm warning against. A lot of comments are simply going for cheap shots about her looks, which as Jeff Sharlet warns, is a trap of that image engineering.

We are caught in what I have just made up a label for - the Adversarial Lookist/Sexist Trap. Bad people are seen to have lost the right to any sort of consideration. Which is, in a sense, true! The problem is that such behavior coarsens both the speaker and the general tone of discourse we want to preserve.

Expand full comment
Doktor Zoom's avatar

And as Jeff Sharlet argues convincingly here, that's a trap. Yes, it's a carefully engineered fascist aesthetic, and it's nuanced. But pointing and exclaiming "Look at the hoooor!" is not helpful.

I haven't read the comments you're talking about but I do want to point out that the whole "fuck me" thing is the point. It was the point of Sarah Palin. It's the point of Donny's blond press secretaries. It's the point of Alina Habba. This is not the case of attractive (gag) women doing their jobs. It's the jobs "doing" attractive women.

I didn't watch the video. It reminds me of any white woman who stood in front of a cage full of slaves and acted self righteous about it. I cannot stand Noem with her fake face and her pricey watch, though I do wonder how she got the money to buy said watch, after the brouhaha over Kamala Harris' necklace ($800 was it? Something like that).

Noem reminds me of every horrible Karen you could ever meet. She fits right in with this cabal of of white tears and victims, mediocre and immoral.

Why does Wonkette do the fascist state's work for it? The fash produce a disgusting propaganda video designed to elicit bloodlust in the base and produce helpless outrage in everyone else. We publish it here, so we can be helplessly outraged.

Outrage farming is becoming a real problem on liberal media in the Trump era. Get everyone angried up, which turns into despair for want of anything real to do. And let's face it, no-one who wasn't already anti-Trump would have their minds changed by this.

Kristi “Dog Executioner” Noem took a little field trip to El Salvador this week and came back with literal Nazi propaganda footage featuring shirtless, tattooed men shoved in cages — none of whom, it turns out, were the migrants the U.S. had just illegally deported there. But when you’re building a fascist mythos, truth is optional. Stagecraft? Required.

She stood there, Rolex glinting, hair immaculate, eyes dead, and declared, “This is one of the tools in our tool kit.” Kristi, darling, that isn’t a policy. That’s a war crime with better lighting. This happens when your national “security” strategy is stolen from a Netflix cartel drama and dressed up in Leni Riefenstahl aesthetics.

These men, some refugees, some legal residents, some just tattooed, weren’t given hearings, lawyers, or charges. They were disappeared. And Noem’s little fascist fashion shoot is part of the Trump regime’s grand experiment: to normalize brutality by branding it as toughness. And the goal isn’t just deportation; it’s deterrence through terror.

This isn’t immigration policy. It’s state-sponsored sadism.

Get loud. Get organized. Or get used to seeing your country in black-and-white footage with ominous music in the background.

Yeah, Google Images reverse search is beyond the capacity of most cops to use. They can't even figure out global time zones and international dialing.

(That last sentence isn't a joke, at least in my case. When my best friend committed suicide, I had to be the one to break the news to his family, because they all lived overseas and the local cops apparently couldn't dial the phone numbers he'd thoughtfully left in his suicide note.)
