And another feel-good moment in a feel-good story, Republicans can't go apeshit over this because it's at a private school where they're not allowed to say shit.

The last place I worked we had a gentleman there who learned about composting and recycling while he was in elementary or a latter time in his public school and he wanted to do a class on it. It was great that the company said,” Sure! Why not?” As an avid recycler and composter I learned a lot. He was kind to share this and I was pretty proud that our company encouraged it. Thanks, Sterling. You’re an upstanding citizen of the planet.

Composting meat and dairy is usually not recommended because a) it attracts scavengers (rats, raccoons, etc.) more than veggies and b) it can smell worse in the early stages. The key is to put that stuff deep in the pile when you build it. You can also charcoal-ize it and use it as part of the brown material (carbon) vs. green (nitrogen).

Any compost pile can smell bad if it has the wrong mix of carbon to nitrogen and/or goes anaerobic, but animal products are guaranteed to quickly be in this state.

Ta, Dok. I am SO impressed by this. Earth School, which is around the corner from us on Avenue B in the east village closed for a while to install a green roof. Unfortunately, the scaffolding and so forth around the school covered up some of the fruit trees. I'm sure they'll work it out eventually.

It's not an evil plan! I don't know what to do if it isn't an evil plan!

A more modest proposal?

My town has a subsidized composting project at a small cost to each household, that is also nicely collaborative--one nonprofit provides the bins and the pick up (and, like that school, it's any kitchen waste, not just vege), and a different nonprofit--The Talking Farm, a wonderful urban farm educational center right down the street from me-- provides the composting itself. Then, in the spring, if you've participated you get to pick up for free, 2 cf of compost (that's about 2 5gal buckets), although you have to provide your own containers.

They've also added a drop off service on the compost distribution for car-free people who find it difficult to haul 2 cf of compost on a bus or bike, and that is because I pointed out to them when I had no car that people without cars were unable to easily arrange to get their soil.

What does "cf" mean?

Another part of my childhood slips into his reward. RIP, Tommy Smothers. Your Mother always liked you best.

I told Ms. O, and she'd seen them at the state fair many a year ago. Said they were funny.

Sherry's avatar

I read this too and went to watch some of the old Smothers Brothers shows. Definitely ahead of its time. We were avid watchers of the show.

Zyxomma's avatar

May his memory always be a blessing. Tommy always said, "Mom always liked you best" to Dickie, however.

I listened to this story last week, on my way home from work. If nothing else, kids need to learn where their food comes from and how it can be done more ethically.

This article from Vox in 2015 that discussed an article put out by Josh Barro claiming Trump to be a moderate:

Donald Trump is the perfect "moderate"

https://www.vox.com/2015/8/15/9159117/donald-trump-moderate

Lefty Wright's avatar

Trump was still sort of hunting around to define his base voters. But even then he opposed the Affordable Care Act so any claims he supported a national health service was bullshit. Or supported abortion rights, equal rights for women and minorities, expanded voting rights, union rights, gay rights, or pretty much anything that you could call moderate.

In North Carolina around 2014 a leader in the state legislature, current US senator Thom Tillis, was running for a vacant US Senate seat and was labeled a moderate by even liberal news sources but he was instrumental in passing repressive laws on voting, abortion funding, safety net programs, and of course pushing tax cuts for corporations. Compared to a couple of his GOP primary opponents, he did not call for executing gay people but he was not moderate.

Cincinnatus's avatar

That was back in 2015, when people thought Trump had "ideas" and "policies."

Bupkus231's avatar

Even before that, Barro ( at the time a registered Republican, but self-described as a libertarian ) routinely pissed off the right - so maybe this was an attempt to suck up to the right

SkeptiKC's avatar

I really HATE the way these pundits bastardize definitions.

Thesaurus Wrecks's avatar

Yep. I don’t think it’s an accident or a mistake that the media is still trying to pass Trump off as a moderate.

You really have to go out of your fucking way to say that the guy who sent an angry mob to hang his own VP to try and hold on to power is some kind of “moderate”.

SkeptiKC's avatar

Without Drumpfenfuehrer these "news" outlets aren't going to be ca$hing in on all of tho$e click$ and view$.

Facts are whatever they believe with no need for evidence.

I'd like to know what these PAB supporters consider the word "insurrection" to mean - I see so many of them denying that Jan 6th was an insurrection ( still ) and/or that all the indictments against PAB don't contain 'insurrection" ( they ignore the conspiracy and obstruction charges )

UVB-76's avatar

Denying that Jan 6th was an insurrection = not guilty plea for something you obviously did. And where's their percentage in admitting anything, make 'em prove it in court...oh, wait....

Moderately stinky compared to huge poopiles.

Do moderates tend to attempt violent coups?

UVB-76's avatar

The moderately violent ones do.

They refer to those as "I Can't Believe It's Not Insurrection!"

Won’t anyone think of the endangered servers that will need massive chemical refrigeration and power to exist?

Satanic Pancake's avatar

I’m thinking of getting a couple of those new NVIDIA GPUs, at 700 watts each, to heat my home in the winter. I’m probably going to have to leave the refrigerator door open in the summer to cool things down, though.

Uncle Milburn's avatar

Most server farms us just water evaporation for cooling.

The Westin Building in Seattle sends its waste heat via water pipes down the block to help heat Amazon office buildings.

Rocket Cat's avatar

Still, power hogs and heat creators

Uncle Milburn's avatar

Number crunching becomes more power efficient every CPU generation. Most storage has moved away from spinning disks to much cooler SSDs. Much more is moving to "the cloud" which helps realize massive scaling of additive small efficiencies. More powerful servers mean fewer servers and the related top-of-rack networking gear.

Just don't get me started on crypto-mining. That's just wasting resources for bro play money. They can go fuck themselves.

Old Man Yells at Cloud's avatar

If as much compute resources were applied to SETI at Home and Protein Folding at Home as Crypto mining we would have cured Klingon cancer by now.

Similar to the research my nephew is working on; they are using UV light to isolate cancer cells to more easily ID and eliminate them.

Old Man Yells at Cloud's avatar

"When exposed to near-infrared light, these molecules vibrate in unison, creating a force strong enough to disrupt the cancer cells' structure."

If this technique can prove as efficient inside of a human body as it does inside of the controlled environment of the lab then this is ALL of the nice times.

Bupkus231's avatar

That's what I wondered when I saw that headline - if it kills 99% of cancer cells, how many "normal" cells does it kill?

Rocket Cat's avatar

Infrared light is penetrating, but it sounds like they haven’t defined a treatment depth, just the first animal model experiments against melanoma

marcus816's avatar

That could be an awesome development. I have had friends killed and disfigured by melanoma. My red-headed wife’s aunt was killed by skin cancer. She is an outdoor sports enthusiast and educator. We do everything we can, but it is a constant challenge.

The people who made fun of AOC for advocating for better sunscreens and sunblocks (that already exist, BTW) we’re both ignorant and stupid.

Parakeetist's avatar

Nah, you expose the cells to a certain type of light beam, and the cells break up.

Hee hee :)
