Yeah as an NC resident myself I think you're right. Worked at a music store in Durham during his American Idol run, I think the overlap between people who love his music and people who generally vote republican out of ignorance (ie it doesn't actually serve their personal interests) is pretty high in certain demographics. Whether those people STILL love him that much a decade later is a good question, but I think at the very least he makes that race more competitive than most other candidates the democrats could run.
