As I understand it, people who are numb in their feelings understand that they're missing something-- that's why they're attracted to torture, they're fulfilled by the experience of watching. And it's a novelty! I always think of that when I hear of conservatives focus on this aspect of an issue-- I mean 'triggering annoyed feelings' about lightbulbs, rather than arguing the lightbulb issue-- I mean, saying "incandescent bulbs were good enough for my grandfather," or whatever their objection is.
