I'm Haudenosaunee and I'm still fucking mad. I'm happy Peltier is home and can be with relatives and go to Ceremony now, but this is utter bullshit. HE WAS FRAMED TO MAKE A POINT. Literally everyone knows this. I fucking hate this. 😤 You want a political prisoner?? Leonard Peltier.

The trial itself was such a sham that both the judge and the prosecutor in the case have begged for Peltier to be released.

The prosecutor who withheld evidence and extorted a confession? That person should be in jail :k

Slightly off topic but not really. Orange fulfilled his promis to pardon Ross. I'm wondering how the FBI was okay with this but allowed an innocent man to sit in prison for 40 years. And he didn't get a pardon. I swear the hatred of indigenous Americans is deep in this country. So much to the point that no one cared to put their political strength behind it. No millionaire, no politician.

Leonard Peltier was never an AIM "leader."

He was a thug who victimized other Indians, but happened to find someone to write a nice book about him.

And the warrant for Jimmy Eagle wasn't for stealing cowboy boots. It was for violently attacking the person who was wearing the cowboy boots when he stole them.

I don't doubt you but could you point to any unbiased reporting?

I apologize for the sarcastic response. If you look up RESMURS, you'll find various sources on both sides. All the appeals decisions are available on-line as well.

Whale Chowder's avatar

Following up on this, I now see that RESMURS isn't some court document system as I originally thought, but a whole collection of papers and websites related to the Peltier case and the Oglala murders.

I've looked through a few of what I judged to be the most unbiased ones. Doesn't seem to be much dispute that he was there, and by there I mean right there, when they were murdered. I don't think anyone can prove he pulled the trigger but then they didn't have to, although the law thinks they have.

That said, 50 years is a long time and Peltier probably isn't much of a threat for his remaining years. Maybe Biden did the right thing after all, again.

UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

Sorry. RESMURS is the government name for the various cases associated with the Pine Ridge goings-on

I agree with your conclusion. Peltier is 80. There's no reason to keep anyone that age in prison.

I object to Peltier being held up as some Indian hero. He's not. He's actually lucky to have served his time in federal prison. The easily proven felonies he committed in Oregon -- burglary, grand theft of a firearm, attempted murder of a police, felon in possession of firearm, possession of a stolen firearm (Agent Coler's sidearm). possession of explosive devices, fleeing and eluding -- would have buried his ass in Pendleton until the end of time.

Same - I agree he shouldn't be in prison anymore, but I really object to his portrayal as some sort of saintly innocent, which he most certainly is not. He VERY likely knows exactly what happened to Annie Mae Aquash, and may have been directly involved in her murder.

UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

I don't know enough about the Aquash case to say one way or the other, but the evidence that he, Butler, and Charles were robbing and burglarizing people on the rez is awfully solid. That Looking Cloud and Graham were part of the same AIM-supported goon squad is not surprising.

Thanks for being patient with me while I did a little homework. I think it's an indication of how little I knew that I didn't know what RESMURS is. Today I'll go to sleep knowing a little more than I did this morning and I appreciate your time.

I apologize, again, for my initial sarcasm. Every felony conviction should be subject to review. You wanted to actually learn the facts and deserved better than me being a smart-ass.

Whale Chowder's avatar

OK, thanks. Was hoping for something more of a narrative nature since I'm not a lawyer. I'm also pretty convinced that our Native neighbors have pretty consistently been given the short end of the stick from the law so a straight up failed appeal might or might not be convincing. I can't judge what should or shouldn't be allowed.

I'll see what I can find on my own.

See, I did it myself.

I should clarify that when I refer to "AIM's version of events" I mean the larger context. I don't know that AIM has ever offered any alternative to the government's theory of the Coler and Williams murders.

Expand full comment
UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

Part of the problem here is that the ostensibly neutral arbiter, the US Government, gets accused of being biased because it doesn't unswervingly adopt AIM's version of events. Understand that what led up to the deaths of agents Coler and Williams was not a conflict between the Oglala Lakota and the USG; it was a conflict between two tribal factions. One faction was backed by AIM, and it was an AIM leader who brought Peltier -- who had no other connection to Pine Ridge -- to the rez. The right-wing faction, led by the elected tribal president, had created its own private militia, so AIM went out and found its own muscle.

In other words, the political environment kind of skews all the narrative. Good luck, though. I wish I could be more help.

Expand full comment
UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

Nope, because anything that tends to prove Peltier's guilt -- including the court records of his 22 unsuccessful appeals -- is "biased." There are many, many studies out there of the RESMURS cases, but the only ones that aren't biased are the ones that conclude that all the evidence of Peltier's guilt was fabricated.

Umm, Peltier has said, repeatedly, that he does not want a pardon, "for something that [he] didn't do." So this is the best Joe could do, and LP, 80 and unhealthy, gets to die at home, with his loved ones.

We hate Republican-engineered gerrymandering as a general rule (or that of Democrats sans spines who "want to be faaaaiiir" like national Rs and Ds are playing the same "game")

If their gerrymandering cheating hadn't been enabled by SCOTUS in North Carolina, national Democrats would have three more seats and Hakeem Jeffries would be Speaker of the House

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WymYBmlC-HI

I know we all really hate gerrymandering math (with the exception of AG Holder) but this is arguably one of the most compelling reasons for as many of us as possible to work together to understand it
