RIP to one of the world’s few good men, the man who helped Harry meet Sally, taught us to stand by our friends, believe in true love, and survive a little Misery along the way.

Mark Linimon's avatar

The difference between these two men is that nobody will be sad when Trump dies.

Rain Robinson's avatar

Best obituary about the Reiners, thank you. And thanks for the clips. The film Rob and his son wrote together is heartbreaking. The tragedy of the end of the Reiners' lives does not erase the wonder and joy Rob and Michelle brought to this world. What a sad, mad world this is.

tempusfugit's avatar

That murdering punk's lawyers had better fucking NOT trot out a bullshit 'insanity defense....'

Virgin Monk Boy's avatar

Trump calling it “TDS” is the most on-brand grief response imaginable. A man dies, a legacy ends, and Trump still finds a mirror. Rob Reiner made joy, challenged power, and outlived Meathead by decades. Trump made everything about himself. Only one of those is remembered as a human being.

Daydream Believer's avatar

Fun fact: Penny Marshall (then Rob Reiner’s wife) was up for the part of Gloria in “All In The Family”. She nearly got it too. She said “There were three other girls who looked like Archie, but I was the only one who looked like Edith.” In the end, she turned it down because Rob and she thought it would be too much to work together 12 to 13 hours and then go home together at night.

When Trump dies, the entire world will (literally or figuratively) piss on his grave.

"[L]ife doesn’t always come with a Hollywood ending. But I believe in the worlds Reiner created where good triumphs over evil and true love wins. There is a kind spirit carefully woven into Reiner’s films - of real human goodness - that is in such short supply today. Reiner’s world of benevolence, it seems to me, is at war with Trump’s world of hate. We must all decide which will it be."

All the emotions I felt upon hearing about Phil Hartman's death came rushing back when I read about the Reiners. What a horrible story. So tragic all the way around, too.

Somewhat nice time, at least, from a medical perspective.

https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/first-human-cornea-transplant-using-3d-printed-lab-grown-tissue-restores-sight-in-a-game-changer-for-millions-who-are-blind/

As the headline says, they grew a cornea for a patient in a lab using lab-grown human eye cells, then 3D-printed them into a cornea, and implanted it into a patient. They're expanding this to 10-15 patients. The company that did this is in North Carolina, but they're doing the therapies in Israel for...some reason, probably to do with cost, tbh. They'll be announcing results from the second stage of the study in the second half of 2026.

Honestly, despite the involvement of Israel, this IS good news. Cornea transplants suck, and if people can avoid rejection risk, then good.

Marycat2021's avatar

What has this to do with Rob Reiner and his wife? You're being like Trump. Please stop and show some compassion.

Dusty Tomes's avatar

It's an open thread, so I'm posting an open thread nice time?

Marycat2021's avatar

You obviously don't know what "open thread" means.

Rebecca Schoenkopf's avatar

hi Marycat, that is in fact what open thread means. Any topic is welcome on both the tabs post and the last post of the day.

Rabbit Rebozo's avatar

Around here it's always meant "post whatever you want." You don't have to be on-topic.

Marycat2021's avatar

OK. I never heard of it, and google was no help. Mea culpa.

Whadda mean, you're still processing my order for a manifold boot kit? Just put in a box and ship it. Do I have to explain how retail works to everyone? Jesus Christ, Mother Mary, and Joseph. Back in my day, if you got an order, you delivered. YOU HAVE ONE JOB.

Shocktreatment's avatar

"It's OK! We're sending you the wrong item number anyway!"

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

"Please rate your experience!"

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

I thought that was some sort of footwear before I googled "manifold boot kit." It seems like some sort of thing related to diesel engines.

Don't get me started in my ordeal with getting a refund from Amazon on some item that I never received because some delivery droid didn't read my FUCKING GOTTDAMN delivery instructions. AGAIN!

blueicebank's avatar

Old school carburetor, which connects to the manifolds. The rubber connector boots wear out, which is a problem.

Mechanic: “Well, that’s your problem right there.”

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

The problem seems manifold.

blueicebank's avatar

lol. It’s actually the connector thingies. But let’s not quibble.

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

What are your delivery instructions?

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

You need a sign on your door "Deliveries please ring bell."

a bunch of companies laid off some folk a month or two ago (three?) and it got me wondering if the "processing" thing this year is that. Like they do not have enough workers for the demand so they just say they are "processing" for a lot longer than it used to be.

But shareholder value, so it's all good

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

It's all of that A1 that's replacing real warm blooded workers. It does not work. But the oligarchs have a huge steak in it.

YaJagoff's avatar

A huge steak? Fuck em, let them eat gruel like the rest of us.

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

If they gave up their steaks they wouldn't need A1. (I hate A1 on steaks--or anywhere else. It tastes like warm Pepsi.)

Shocktreatment's avatar

Maybe I'm misremembering, but wasn't there a time when bringing spurious cases or frivolous lawsuits was a common reason for lawyers to be disciplined?

In NYS they'll let you keep bringing cases till you've bankrupted the opponent, and though they can award legal fees to the opponent if you lose, they never ever ever do.
