The diagnosis was made after a rocky first trimester and unusual health problems for her; a series of tests and an amnio confirmed it, but it took time, and everyone on her medical team worked to give her all of the information she needed to make the decision that was right for her. Thankfully she was living in Chicago and was affiliated with one of our best hospitals. Their medical expertise in conjunction with sane laws allowed her to terminate and later to go on and have that deeply wanted second child with her partner a few years later I wonder if she would be alive if she had lived in a different state or had a different skin color, or had no money (that wondering is absolutely rhetorical, BTW).
