"So, Pete, why did your town increase arrests of black people for marijuana possession so much under you?" That was a lie on the part of the moderator, since arrests of all categories of people for any kind of drug charge have gone down sharply under Pete."Pete is saying some words I am not going to repeat because I am not going to call him a ballsy liar." He quite correctly asked, WTF are you talking about? The numbers went the other way. The moderator explained in a convoluted way that she was talking about her derived statistic, the RATIO of black arrests to white arrests, which she said had increased-- which is to say, arrests went down faster for white people then for black people."He tried to explain it by saying there was some type of scourge of gang violence in South Bend." Because there has been. Indiana has notoriously lax guns laws and forbids local authorities like mayors from enacting any ordinances, and gun smuggling into Chicago through the northern cities (Gary and Hammond also have this problem) has triggered violent turf wars. The police largely restrict drug charges to cases where they find drugs along with guns."I got a lot of heat for even discussing systemic racism with my PD." -- "Was that WHILE you were firing the black police chief and forcing out the black fire chief, or LATER? This is some fucked up shit." It sure is. Pete is the one who HIRED the black police chief (not fire chief). The previous mayor Luetke only thought Boykins worth being a token seat-warmer while they interviewed white candidates only to fill the post, but as a courtesy Luetke left it up to the incoming mayor to make the final choice. Buttigieg decided to interview Boykins also, and gave him the job in preference to Luetke's finalists. But he had to hear from the FBI not from Boykins about the wiretapping investigation, and felt he could not continue a relationship with Boykins when Boykins was keeping something like that from him.Yes, Pete has demanded that the police department "remove the effects of systemic racism" repeatedly, and has gotten grief from the "fraternal order" constantly about "how dare he say every cop is a racist?"
