The Trenton track (which was in Mercerville and is long gone) had a very tricky dogleg that was probably responsible for the majority of wrecks and crashes there. IIRC, the last time I was there was 1974.

Orb weaver webs aren't that fragile. Their silk is something like four times stronger the equivalent diameter of steel. And it stretches. Big webs have been known to catch birds.

Fun story - I was out hiking one day and accidentally walked through a huge orb weaver web. I danced around and swore and cursed and wiped spider silk out of my eyes, then continued. That evening I got back to camp, and was scratching at an annoying tickling I'd been feeling on my neck all day. I bent over and ruffled all my hair, and...an orb weaver spider with a body the size of my thumb fell off my head and scuttled away over the grass.

I had been walking around all day with an enormous spider chilling in my hair. Fortunately I'm not an arachnophobe, but...I can still see that thing hitting the ground. With a clearly audible PLOP. It was that big.

Straya.
