OT: The book’s author doesn’t seem to realize that most of the “working-class” Trumpites aren’t economically struggling, based on the trucks and boats that they own. She’s parroting the David Brooks argument.
I read the article, too. Arlie Hochschild talks about speaking to citizens of Pikesville, KY, for about 7 years as she researched her book. Something she doesn't question is the attitude of the white men she listened to.
.
The white men see Trump as the "good bully" standing up for them against the Other. The Other is women, BIPOC, immigrants, muslims, anyone who isn't them. If those people are getting ahead, it is because they are "cutting the line" or getting unfair help or advantages. They don't see community as a web of support. Do they see it as their responsibility? Are they even aware of what a community is and can be? The risk-taking warrior aspect of the dangerous work of coal mining must have set them apart from everyone else, and they got great respect for being miners. But Trump didn't bring those jobs back, and they're not coming back.
.
They insist that if they succeed, it is because they did it individually. If they fail, it's because they didn't do it right and it's on them, and they feel great shame. They see taking jobs for $9/hour are "girlie" jobs where one doesn't make enough to take care of the family.
.
To me, this says that the way the males are socialized hurts males and hurts everyone else. These men don't seem to value what the Other brings to the community table. They don't seem adaptable or clued in to how to be with others, as opposed to being above others. I find it terribly sad, but also angering. Basically, Hochschild says Trump is their guy because he manipulates their feelings, and leads them to believe he gets it, he cares about their dilemma, and he can fix it. They can't see that TRUMP IS A CON MAN AND A LIAR AND WORSE.
.
At least Hochschild could see that the message Justa Dick Vance was sending to females is, don't wait to get pregnant, have babies when you're young AND END UP LIKE MY MOM IN HILLBILLY ELEGY. She became a mother at 13, was depressed and addicted to drugs, and wasn't capable of being a good mom to Vance, so females should do that! Even if they are single moms in terrible poverty. Reading this book, "Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame and the Rise of the Right," would be infuriating. She says Democrats are going to lose because they're not "bilingual" with both the economics *and* the feelings of these folks, that this election is super tight and close. She hasn't exactly quoted any of them as being even a little curious about the Others' feelings and POV. I guess they feel they shouldn't have to, and isn't that their *real* problem? We're expected to give them empathy but they're not expected to do anything. It may not be intended as a win-lose, suckers' game, but it *feels* like one.
Hmmm, I wonder if its the downwardly mobile part. "Sure I have a boat and a truck but my dad had a boat a truck AND a huge camper". Or something like that?
Judging by the letters to the editor in our local rag, MAGAts are still incensed that Kamala Harris was undemocratically installed as the Dems candidate. Like they should have had a say in removing Old Senile Joe, who they were so eager to thrash in the election.
IDK why people are paying attention to their squealings when everyone isn't registered to vote and Donald is asking MAGAT cops to try American Kristallnacht.
Apropos of nothing, but when I was young (ages 2-4) and living in Maryland, my parents were friends with a semi-retired nurse who was SUPER old. Like, she was so old her hair had turned grey. We're talking OLD.
She babysat for me sometimes, and she liked Three Musketeers candy bars, which happened to also be my favourite. We bonded over the rare but deeply held belief that chocolate candy tastes good, actually.
Her name was Bea, and I was encouraged to call her (and did call her) Aunt Bea. Honestly she was super fun. Though mostly retired she was on a list the hospital could call when they were unexpectedly short-staffed. A substitute nurse, if you will. From working as a nurse in every part of a hospital you could imagine, she had a whole raft of stories to regale your average three year old.
On top of that, she knew things my dad didn't, and he was a doctor and she was a nurse, so he was supposed to know more but **sometimes he didn't!** She would tell me about all the times she caught doctors about to do something stupid, which definitely went over well with 3 year old me.
And on top of *that*, she loved reading books. Like real books. Books with no pictures and lots and lots and lots of words. Books so long that we could read them for a while and then stop and then start reading them again the next time we saw each other and still not be done.
Later I found out that there was an actor named Bea Arthur who ALSO had grey hair. Apparently Arthur was named after Aunt Bea (which made me love her a little extra). But the whole rest of my life I've never had another friend or relative named Bea, so even today if you say the name Bea I will immediately think of Three Musketeers and LONG books and stories about how my dad doesn't really know as much as he thinks he does. Good times.
I'm sure Bea has passed by now, but those memories are forever.
Lovely memories. When I was 6 or 7, one of my favorite things in summer was to get a frozen Three Musketeers at the corner store, for the princely sum of a nickel.
Me too! My grandfather's farm was near a Popsicle factory, so we kids could walk to a gas station that often had watermelon, root beer, or blueberry popsicles in their freezer. Heaven!
The other day I was thinking about my teachers from kindergarten through 6th grade and I figure only 2 might still be with us. They were wonderful (except 3rd grade). I wonder how old they really were. Miss Kennicutt was the oldest person ever. I was mesmerized by her--she was tiny and wore pastel slacks suits and had red hair. She taught me kindergarten. I LOVED her and made my mom invite her to my birthday party the next year. She got along with my grandma, so I assume they were close in age and they both loved me. I wanted pastel slacks suits when I grew up. I suppose she died in the '80s at some point, but I loved her.
Curious - are the US PARALYMPIC athletes there?
Tomorrow we must all honor one of our nation's truly good leaders on his 100th birthday.
Jimmy Carter was far better than this republic deserved. He is another honorable leader whom I love and respect with EVERY fiber of my being.
I'm so glad for Jimmy making it to 100. He really deserved that. I want him to be able to make it to see Kamala Harris and Tim Walz win too.

I've concluded that the Trumpite is basically "I'm racist and I'm stupid".
Squawking nonsense complaints is how this prick makes his dubious living.
I won't pity him when he finally chokes on an airport sandwich.
FYI: The author is a woman.
Thanks for the correction. I mistook “Arlie” for a man’s name.
It sounds like a romance novel name. For some reason, romance novel's shy away from using common women's names for their main characters.
Don’t the men’s names tend to be uncommon as well, like Ruark?
Yes. Clearly life is more adventurous for Rorie and Clive.
Hmmm, I wonder if its the downwardly mobile part. "Sure I have a boat and a truck but my dad had a boat a truck AND a huge camper". Or something like that?
Then he's stupid
Or he didn't see the video of all the Trumpers' motorboats sinking in that race they tried to have.
There's a thing in this country.
Just because someone is RICH it doesn't mean that person is SMART.
They could be Don Jr.
Or Eric.

I intend to sit back, put my feet up, take a BIG hit followed by a swill of good beer, relax, and watch them CRY.
They're just pissed because Kamala is whipping PAB's ass so thoroughly. Stay miserable and die mad, motherfuckers.
Yeah, the MAGAts can fuck off.

Priorities, folks.
I don't care what you say, I like that guy.
I think too many people base their opinion of him on what the media says about him and not what’s really happening.
Even though he's old.
I love the man to bits.

OT: RIP Dikembe Mutombo, NBA Hall of Famer and humanitarian extraordinaire, dead of brain cancer at 58.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dikembe-mutombo-dies-nba-hall-of-famer-brain-cancer-age-58/
Dikembe is much loved around here, in part because of his time with the Denver Nuggets.
Rest In Power.
:(
YUP!
I was in the area when he played for the Nuggets and he was a sweet man.
What a heartbreaking loss.
Mt Olympus would have smote Trump for his hubris.
Is it 'would have smote', or 'would have smitten'?
Perhaps it matters, to a stoat or a kitten.
"would have smited", perhaps
We can definitely rule out 'smut', I'm sure.
🤮
As I read it again, I'm thinking mitten smitten
Where would asstrump be right now, golfing?
Fucking asshole!

3 caramels for a nickel
Three Musketeers have been my favorite candy treat ever since I can remember.
But the least I can ever remember paying for one was 8 cents MANY years ago.
I was on a Reese's Buttercups kick for a while. Save up my money and everything for those.
Me too! My grandfather's farm was near a Popsicle factory, so we kids could walk to a gas station that often had watermelon, root beer, or blueberry popsicles in their freezer. Heaven!
My sister loved those things so I could always trade her my Reese's Buttercups for her Three Musketeers bars on Samhain.
The Snickers bars were all reserved for our Dad. He LOVED those things.
I love this.

Sweet. Beautiful. And thank you for this.
Blessed Bea.
Those athletes smiling widely at a President who is genuinely proud as HELL to represent them are a damned beautiful sight.
In a perfect mythological world, Charon's Ferry for PAB's soul would be a fully laden garbage scow.
Handsome Joe!
Quick, someone mail Trump the head of Medusa, and tell him he doesn’t have the balls to open the package.
Tell him NOT to invite his children for the opening of the box because they'd just be jealous.
I can't help but wonder if Drumpfenfuehrer is a 21st century Medusa.
Oh, YES!
