OT, but enough to make one scream: Grieving mother laments the loss of her 14 yo son to fentanyl.

She ‘didn’t know what it was, because no one was talking about it.’ Don’t have kids and cannot presume to know the depth of her pain. However, for the sake of any other children she may have, I beseech Dog to grant her peace and some personal clarity, in that - a) everyone has been talking about it on every conceivable platform for going on 10 years and, b) son’s overdose resulted from a laced Percocet, which leads me to believe there were a LOT of things she didn’t know about. Wish nothing but misery to the dealers who maximize profits by cutting their usual products with this death sentence. However, many of these parents who have lost children to fentanyl would advocate shooting migrants on sight at the border, rather than address the fact that their kid was already an addict. In the old days, this would be like the Mom of an end-stage drunk blaming the dude that sold him his fatal shot of moonshine.

HRC spoke very highly of Jake Sullivan in her book. I think he was very early in his career when he worked with her, and she was appreciative of his work. Look how far he has come!

SterWonk's avatar

Someone last week pointed out that prior to this administration, he had mostly done domestic policy stuff, but he has really thrown himself into foreign policy now.

1st light's avatar

No, in HRC's book he was working on international stuff also, but maybe it was too low level to register. Her book really brought out how hard the State Dept works, which most people have not idea about.

When will Biden apologize for using the term Bidenomics? It’s insulting to Hispanic voters who have to work 3 jobs because of his policies.

OT: Ammon Bundy decided not to show up for his contempt trial today. Judge Baskin was not amused, and revoked his $10K bond and issued a warrant for his arrest, this time setting bond at a cool $250K. Perhaps this will convince him to go the fuck back to Nevada.

That there is another gang of coddled wingnut snowflakes in serious goddamn need of some finding-out.

UncleTravelingMatt's avatar

There's a $26 million judgment against him. Serious enough?

Russell Jones's avatar

Maybe, depending on how the collection efforts go. :D

There is no I in scream.

But there is one in ice cream. Which means you can’t have mine.

SterWonk's avatar

Subhead: 'The code does not specify how the rules would be enforced or by whom.'

So, bullshit.

Satanic Pancake's avatar

That was a seriously long attack on poor Justice Thomas. By Canon 2, item C, it is clear that the poor guy needs to be removed.

Shocktreatment's avatar

"The new Supreme Court code of conduct agreed to by all nine justices does not appear to impose any significant new requirements on them"

"But at least we got Clarence on board..."

SkeptiKC's avatar

If there wasn't a proper pinky swear then I don't believe it's going to be effective.

Rhand Holm's avatar

Wait, what is the "code"? The Times didn't print it or link to it. So we have to take their word that a code exists? Did I miss it in there? WTF.

Rhand Holm's avatar

Yep. Found it on SCOTUS's website. It amazes me that the NYTs considers itself the Paper of Record when they can't be bothered to provide said record.

https://www.supremecourt.gov/about/Code-of-Conduct-for-Justices_November_13_2023.pdf

1st light's avatar

So do the RWNJs belong to the Federalist Society, and is that considered non-discriminatory?

Rhand Holm's avatar

The Federalist Society is very non-discriminatory to other members of the Federalist Society.

Rhand Holm's avatar

"Justice Kagan said she believed an ethics code “would, I think, go far in persuading other people that we were adhering to the highest standards of conduct.” No enforcement or investigation procedure means it's just messaging.

SterWonk's avatar

Note: She said that months ago, about a hypothetical ethics code. Not about the toothless thing that was released today.

1st light's avatar

Yeah, that was not a very intelligent statement.

Cincinnatus's avatar

At least it's more detailed than "Just don't get caught."

ciaobella's avatar

"Left unclear was how the code will be enforced."

Violators will be scolded and tut-tutted.

Shocktreatment's avatar

An ALL CAPS key and not afraid to use it!

SkeptiKC's avatar

There may be a few furrowed brows...

Daniel's avatar

Punishment will include, but may not be limited to, a week of clever, sly jokes about whatever the infringement was to which the offending Justice may not attempt a comeback.

1st light's avatar

Punishment to be delivered by Stephen Colbert, the Jimmys, and Seth.

Rhand Holm's avatar

Now let's not do anything too hasty. I'm sure a raised eyebrow or a wink would suffice.

Teen Laqueefa's avatar

I figured a wink and a nod.

OT midday personal news announcement!

As of yesterday, I am now a certified desert witch AND I got asked to go into business for real as a (legal! and licensed!) producer of edibles, made with wildcrafted native plants and cold-pressed rosin from biodynamic, outdoor-grown cannabis. I've been playing with this idea for a while, like a fantasy "my dream job". Suddenly I got clearance from the state as a producer, and did the branding & paperwork and got certified and then the commercial kitchen & cannabis license appears. Today, if I'm not mistaken I'll get a check for a large chunk of cash in the mail that can be used as seed money.

I guess my question is..... when you've been asking the universe for something and the universe shows up in a big way, you gotta go for it, right? You can't say LOL universe, JK I think I'm going after that deputy county clerk position.

Zyxomma's avatar

Beautiful! Congratulations, legal and licensed Desert Witch.

Boogie Mama's avatar

Living the dream, thank you so much! <3

1st light's avatar

Can you get good benefits as a deputy county clerk? Congrats, and best wishes!!

zuludaddy (seem 'on key?')'s avatar

(hey I may be able to be of service to you and your new venture and if you'd like to discuss, I can be reached at this nym at icloud dot the usual :] )

VogonPoeticLicense's avatar

Congratulations. Words fail.

SunMoonStars's avatar

Congratulations this is amazing and I am so happy for you. It's really good to read when someones dreams come true. I wish you all the best.

I am a graphic designer and if there is anyway that I can help you let me know. I have helped many new businesses with their brand/logo, packaging etc.

Babe Paley's avatar

I know this isn't for me, but I find myself in a position where I will need a logo (I think that's what I'm calling it) for t-shirts and some other materials--do you know where I should look for help with something simple? This is not an area where I know anything, and would love direction from an expert so that all my stuff works together.

SunMoonStars's avatar

Yep, you'd talk to me and I'd be glad to help. How do we exchange info?

Babe Paley's avatar

Shoot me a contact email at BabePaley2@gmail.com and I'll reach out (off Wonkette)--we can exchange information from there.

I can volunteer Wonkers who can vouch for me as well if needed.

Boogie Mama's avatar

Thank you for the kind wishes and the offers of help!

I feel overwhelmed and humbled at how much has manifested (sorry too long in the Land of Woo) the minute I need it.

I got a basic concept & an artist friend is working through all the products to make real labels (I have about a dozen drug free products). I'm still making up my mind with some of the packaging.

https://substack.com/@queenellen/note/c-42786838?utm_source=notes-share-action&r=b2vrq

Yesterday was a dear friend's birthday so I put together what I called my "California Sober Starter Set" with two dozen low-sugar edibles (she's a fitness nut) and two bottles of mocktail mix, one each of prickly pear and chokecherry. It made me giggle.

The retailer where the products will be sold is a high-end dispensary with outlets in Los Alamos and Santa Fe, where the more precious and pissy it is, the more money the customers will shell out, so small-batch, handcrafted candies are going to be the shit.

SunMoonStars's avatar

Then I'll leave you in good hands. If you need anything don't hesitate to reach out. I'll be glad to help. I've done this since dirt so my portfolio is extensive. I do not build websites but I design pieces and parts that go onto websites.

Babe Paley's avatar

You know you'll HAVE to tell me about where to go for these in SF!!!

Babe Paley's avatar

Wow lady! This is great, great news!

zuludaddy (seem 'on key?')'s avatar

ummmmm, potlife vs office? really?

you know the way, Boogie Mama!

[lights another hit]

Boogie Mama's avatar

Aye cap'n! Your words are wise.

Still need to pay the bills for a while but I think I can figure that out. I'm on leave from my job for a few more months but right after I went on leave they made it a firing offense to have financial ties to the cannabis industry, so it's one or the other.

zuludaddy (seem 'on key?')'s avatar

oh your choice seems even more clear, then!

also too see my reply above, now weirdly out of place, but...

Boogie Mama's avatar

No I appreciate it and will take you up on it, thank you! Scipio is in a whole different branch of the industry.

The joke is, when legalization started I was working for cops & spent a lot of years looking wistfully through the window like a common charlie bucket.

zuludaddy (seem 'on key?')'s avatar

what I do is not at all pot-specific!

also too, you've found the Golden Ticket, woman!! :]

OT: Will Maryanne Trump be buried on the golf course in Bedminster (next to Ivana)?

.

Don't you need to get special permits to bury people outside of cemeteries?

zuludaddy (seem 'on key?')'s avatar

the whole point of burying Ivana there was to get the tax break for being a cemetery, apparently

ciaobella's avatar

No, he buried his ex-wife on his golf course so he could continue to cheat on her.

(h/t Jimmy Kimmel)

ciaobella's avatar

That joke came right at the end of the writers strike.

Writers: "We're BACK, baby!"

Daniel's avatar

Maybe his Covid policy was about getting yuge tax breaks then.

zuludaddy (seem 'on key?')'s avatar

for his friends, tax breaks

for his enemies, the bug

Daniel's avatar

Ggenerally they want you to bury them inside, yeah.

Butch's avatar

The Bette Davis quote seems to fit: "You should never say bad things about the dead, you should only say good . . . Joan Crawford is dead. Good."

Maryanne Trump has died at 86. Donald is the last of Fred's sperm.

ciaobella's avatar

He still has an older sister, Elizabeth.

Zeitgeist's avatar

She didn't like PAB (or his voters) very much either:

“It’s the phoniness of it all,” Mrs. Barry told her niece. “It’s the phoniness and this cruelty. Donald is cruel.”

“All he wants to do is appeal to his base,” Mrs. Barry continued to her niece. “He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this.”

Elviouslyqueer's avatar

Proving conclusively that not EVERY sperm is sacred.

And yet ANOTHER reason to hope for the worst outcome for PAB....
