Jared Kushner and the Saudis. He should skip his little pink ass over to go live them, they like the occasional blue-eyed devil.

Update from a friend in Israel

The death toll has been increased to 1200 people as they find more bodies. Of that number 123 were soldiers. They found brutalized bodies, beheaded as well (i don't know if they were babies or not but still pretty awful) the number of hostages is now estimated to be over 200.

There are still terrorists hidden in israel, and a few gunfights in the south.

The political drama has yet to resolve itself but it does look like there will be an emergency wartime cabinet, but the specifics are not yet clear

The northern border was quiet all day but in the evening there were small clashes, for now things are quiet again.

There were many rockets sent from gaza today and hamas expressed its intentions to destroy the city of ashkelon in retribution for the air strikes in gaza.

They also stated that they will start to murder hostages if the idf does any air strikes without warning civilians first.

Today for the first time press was allowed to go into the towns in Southern Israel where the brutality happened, from what I understand they were not allowed in the homes.

More and more Israelis are speaking out about the fury at bibi and his government and see him as responsible (not entirely responsible but yeah...)

The cabinet is meeting tonight and presumably they will decide what the next steps are.

As usual my sources are channel 12, times of israel, and kan

OT. Weeks like this demand space news!

"Gaia Mission Discovers Half a Million New Stars and 150,000 Asteroids"

"The latest data release from the European Space Agency’s Gaia observatory just dropped, and it’s a massive one: the spacecraft has identified half a million stars in a nearby cluster, nearly 400 gravitational lenses, and the orbits of some 156,000-odd asteroids.

... "'With the new data we can study the cluster’s structure, how the constituent stars are distributed, how they’re moving, and more, creating a complete large-scale map of Omega Centauri,' said Alexey Mints, a member of the Gaia Collaboration and the Leibniz-Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam, in an ESA release.

Gaia made a chunk of my work obsolete, and I'm here for it. It's an astonishing achievement, basically measuring positions of stars something like 100 times more accurately than anything that has gone before -- and there is a HUGE amount you can do with such a leap in precision. All of a sudden, we have a reasonably accurate distance to every star within a couple thousand light years!

New York Times: Biden, who is old, talks about Israel:

Biden said that he first visited Israel over 50 years ago as a newly elected senator. Biden is facing scrutiny over his age and ability to lead. His long experience with Israel will no doubt be emphasized by his advisers — and, likely, his campaign — in the days ahead.

As a non-partisan journalist it is my duty to ask this ridiculous question even though it’s super easy to debunk. Hamas has been planning the attack for two years and not one penny of that $6 billion, which has been restricted to humanitarian aid only, has been spent.

Ugh, another new commenter here to school us all, on how Israel is just the worst.

This “schooling” could have been offered at any time in the last 10 years, but after hundreds of Israeli citizens were butchered, right now is the perfect time to offer a critique.

It’s amazing that when hundreds of citizens are slaughtered, the never before expressed opinions, come out.

shivaskeeper's avatar

It's not moral clarity. It's seeing the same crap arguments recycled over and over and over again.

There is literally no difference in blaming civilians being slaughtered in Isreal right now because they deserved it and blaming a woman for being sexually assaulted because the way she was dressed means she was asking for it.

It's the same brain poisoned "logic". It's the same excuses as to why the victim is the one at fault. It's the same whataboutism.

The actual circumstances may be different, but the crap arguments are always the same.

Lefty Wright's avatar

There is no excuse for murdering hundreds of unarmed men, women, and children in Israel. What Hamas did will only bring more suffering to both sides, but especially Palestinians in Gaza who will be subject to even more repression and military assaults. It will also affect Palestinians on the West Bank as they find their movements more restricted. Hamas did not help anything and damaged everything. This will not lead Israel to any bargaining table and will not increase pressure from America and Europe on Israel to negotiate a Palestinian state. It will do just the opposite, putting Israel on a more belligerent attitude toward Palestinians and with other countries grouping all Palestinians with a terroristic Hamas.

I do think that being freed from Hamas will eventually enable peace.

Hamas was elected in 2006 and built a theocratic extreme right wing hell, a nightmare state, where being gay is a death penalty offense, blasphemy is death, talking bad about Hamas is death, being trans is death ... and spent every cent on war & hate.

They never allowed another election.

"Of course it would be best if we removed the fascist and fundamentalists from every state. Lets put them all on an island and let them fight it out with spoons." But that is the majority of the Palestinian population. We do not have a spare island of sufficient size.

"The palestinian struggle got NO attention whatsoever in the first DECADES of the occupation."? You are obviously very young, and do not remember all the plane hijackings, or the assassination of Robert Kennedy, or the Munich Olympics, or any of the other vile acts the Palestinians committed in the immediate aftermath of 1967. Nor do you understand that terrorism had been ongoing for decades before the occupation.

"What did other occupied people do after a couple of YEARS of occupation? They hit the enemy every way they could because they did not have the LUXURY to be more picky." Liar. Lithuanians never murdered Russian schoolchildren. Tibetans never blew up Chinese dance parties. The Palestinian behavior in murdering whoever they can get ahold of is unique.

"But even in such cases insane sadists in their own ranks were dealt with." The Palestinians have chosen the insane sadists as their leaders and role models.

"nor did that happen this time after DECADES of occupation" It started a half-century BEFORE the occupation. The occupation was a response to the terrorism, not the other way around.

Robert Eckert's avatar

But every time the Palestinians were allowed to vote, they have chosen genocidaires. The first time, in 1920, was an overwhelming win for the "Coalition" of Mufti Husseini, campaigning on the slogan itbach al-Yahud "exterminate the Jew" and immediately embarking on murderous attacks against, not Zionist immigrants, but Jewish communities that had been there for centuries, to emphasize that all Jews were to be wiped out.

At this point no Palestinian lands had been "stolen" but Jews had purchased homes and expected to be able to live there, but the very concept of coexisting on terms of mutuality with people unlike themselves was anathema to the Muslim leadership. They were like the KKK burning out the homes of the "wrong" kind of people for moving into the neighborhood.

shivaskeeper's avatar

Not at all. There's plenty of brain poisoned shitheads willing to support slaughter as long as it's bad for the West.

Look at that argument. I mean look at it.

WWII resistance movements against the Nazis are exactly the same as Hamas. We all celebrate the times the French resistance ran into Germany and slaughtered entire German towns don't we? We all remember when the Dutch resistance used rockets to destroy civilian enclaves to send a message. They're famous for that kind of thing.

It's historical ignorance with an appeal to emotion, false equivalence, a lot of red herring all mixed up by a poisoned brain demanding to be taken seriously.

I’m an Israeli who abhors his country’s treatment of the Palestinians, and wishes the west would finally hold us accountable for it. But talking about a “genocide” is so dumb, so easy to disprove, and just serves those who present any and all criticism of Israel as a form of antisemitism.
