Over in Nevada, Ralston is estimating Harris will need to win Independents by 4% to carry the state.

I think that's doable...

Not all Native American children were kidnapped by the gov't & wound up in the boarding schools. I've never seen any numbers on how many children church people kidnapped & gave to nice white Christian families to adopt, even before the official policy started in the 1950's. It is likely impossible to determine. My grandfather was one, and there is no way to find which tribe he came from, much less who his parents were.

Joshua, you carry the answers in your blood. Genealogists might be able to find the community or even relatives (like the police have been doing with crime victims and their perpetrators with the tracking of relatives through Ancestry or 23 and Me). At any rate have your grandfather write down all he knows about his "adoption"/kidnapping, church group, neighbours, etc. People know things, whether they purposely cover up a crime, or might have knowledge that they didn't realise could help. The technology of DNA is advancing and while he might not discover who his people and community are, if he can leave information to help you, I think that would comfort him in a way.

The tribal communities near you may have recommendations too. You, your grandfather and the other lost members are very precious to them. I know you would be to me if I was in that position.

I'm sorry such a tragic and horrific part of history is part of your life and story. I'm sorry our government was so cruel and ugly.

Unfortunately, my grandfather died in 1992. He was an infant/toddler when he was kidnapped, best guess between 1905-1915. I recently submitted my DNA to Ancestry to see if anything or anyone turns up.

That is frustrating and sad to hear. I hope you get some results that will help.

Keep us posted if you are so inclined.

This is almost a hideous thing to say, but "Let's yank Indian kids from their parents and use boarding schools to assimilate them, whether they or their parents like it or not" was the 𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 approach to "the Indian question." Conservatives in those days tended to think more along the lines of, Let 'em starve, and shoot the ones who don't die fast enough.

I was touched by his speech and his emotion as he talked. It's a start, but I feel like all the nice words really have to be backed up by action. Hoping Harris and her admin continue the work.

Apologies are good. Amends are better.

Thank you POTUS Joe to set the stage for a Harris Walz administration to do the "amends" part

Especially since the "Discovery Doctrine" has finally been repealed

Waiting till the Confederates find out about *that*

Today is Nevada Day holiday, which means I was home from my job at a tribal clinic, and therefore able to watch this live. Deb Holland was fierce, the apology by President Biden was moving.

My maternal grandmother's brother (my great-uncle?) was sent off to the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon from Alaska (he was an Aleut, or Unangan in the language).

His case is not at all similar to most others... the Aleuts had been under Russian control for the first 60-70 years of the 19th century. Then in 1867 the US bought Alaska. Up until then the Aleuts had been toiling for the Russians in the fur trade, and had become, effectively, Russian. From 1867 on, under the 'loving' tutelage of the Treasury Department, they continued to do the same for the U.S. Government.

By the time Alex got sent off to school most all of the Aleut culture had been wiped clean by being actively 'managed' by 70 years of Russian and another 30-50 years or so of Americans overseeing the fur trade.

So in his case, he got a boost up on the world by getting an education, became a musician, and relocated to Tacoma where he taught music and ran an orchestra. His father was sent off to California earlier, to some boarding school (but not necessarily 'Indian'), returned to Alaska to be the village teacher.

So yeah, he would have been stripped of his cultural identity at school, had it not already happened a couple generations back.

"Native American" applies to the entire Western Hemisphere: Maya, Inca, Aztec, and more.

Yep, I am Puerto Rican so, 23% or so Taino. Of course the Tainos were wiped out within a 100 years of the conquest so very little of the culture is even known. We do have many words surviving including Hurricane derived from the name of their evil god Huracan.

This is definitely a party certain it will win:

They are going to lose the governorship as well, if the voters in that state have any sense of shame left at all.

Well, we can, but only the ones who voted for Harris.

One of these days some intrepid state legislature will decide to allocate all the state's electoral votes to the winner of a battle royale dog shit flinging tournament. That would be perfectly A-OK under the Constitution, and might get some people wondering about the propriety of keeping the Electoral College system.
