I suspect he’s an OK retail politician. Which could work for a senator in a microscopic state like Vermont. And that’s why he keeps getting reelected. He talks to people, they know him. But five pages of a Molly Ivins book is more progressive than he is.

Sen Cornyn is up for re-election in 2020. He will have to run with Trump. He will also have served 3 terms and be near 70. He may wish to avoid the aggravation.
Here in California 45th, Katie Porter is now only 2% behind Republican Mimi Walters with about 50K ballots to be counted. These ballots skew way Democratic so there will probably be one more scalp to add to the pile.
