Virtue signalling meant insincerity in a show for public approval. Now it's used insincerely to invalidate or shame honest effort, by people looking to seem true or pure in their devotion to freedom, of thought and speech, unable to accept that kindness and empathy exist, or that their motives aren't predominant in an opposing party.
