Hi,

I am working on a sort of historical memoir that includes George F. Baer's role in the Anthracite Coal Strike of 190s. You appear to have a very negative and simplistic view of him. You attribute a quotation to him that he never said (I checked the officially published version of the text.) By the way, I am familiar enough with his writings to know that he needed time to explain nuanced political and economic questions. He also could be withering in his sarcasm. Nevertheless, he was a civic-minded gentleman who freely gave of his time and money to support his adopted hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania, and other educational and philanthropic measures.

They like to pretend, don't they?

“These men don’t suffer. Why, hell, half of them don’t even speak English.”

Among Republicans, that attitude hasn't changed a bit in the past 120 years.

My grandfather worked the mines in PA. Often owed the company more than he made- had to rent his equipment from and shop at the company store. Died from black lung. Truly nasty, short and brutish.

Ta, Erik. Always good to know more labor history. Solidarity Forever.

OT but my kids’ cohorts at VCU walked out during Youngkin’s speech 😂

Yes TR was awful in many ways, but his achievements outweigh many. He made it his business to preserve the natural wonders and monuments in the US, established national parks and wildlife reserves, broke up monopolies, started the Panama Canal construction, was a mediator to end the war between Russia and Japan, received the Nobel Peace Prize, and personally toured NYC tenements to see for himself what the conditions really were. Not perfect, but given the norms of the era, he was a cut above most in his compatriots.

Come to think of it, wonder if that’s partly a jealousy thing, as much as greed.

Wreck those in bitterness for the Nobel he will never con for himself.

Speaking of farmers and labor and also coming up on the "Things We Never Thought We Would See or Say" part of the program --

"be like the Episcopalian Church"

Breaking News that looks at least "awesome in defense"

No matter how many South Africans Felonious Orange & Felon Muskrat want to bring in here, they will no longer be getting help resettling them from the Episcopal Church -- who I guess doesn't want to be outdone by the moral stances of the new pope -- who is ending its assistance to the federal government in "resettling" White South Africans into the States ON MORAL GROUNDS, y'all

"The church said it's terminating a decades-long partnership with the federal government to help refugees arriving in the U.S., citing moral opposition to resettling white Afrikaners from South Africa."

You know for me to share via xcancel.com on here it has be to kind of a big deal

And if you shrug to yourself and say "I don't see why it's a big deal" or "It's not as big a deal as X/Y/Z" and gaslight and minimize, then guess what ...?

I did remember to eliminate the comments so nobody has to be subjected to that -- so just read it and think about it, please

Maybe please look for an equivalent outside group that the Nazis brought in to help them eliminate Jewish people, since the playbook they're working out of is literally Mein Kampf -- just so that those of us who literally (I know you saw the police decisions about Trey Nichols) have guns to our heads can get some assistance building a few defenses

(unlike the White people who stood around when the Black women were arrested during the Philly May 1 protests in the first arrests during all these protests and did nothing to protect them)

Just for you, some another citation from "The Wreckers." The British government instituted the "man or beast rule" stipulating that were any human or non-human to be found alive on any wreck, its bounty belonged to the owner. You can imagine what happened next. That's right: it was a license to kill on the part of the wreckers.

China more popular than the US in most countries polled

Baer’s quote about the Christian deity’s infinite wisdom comes close to the theological version of a hate crime, almost as evil as if he said people who lose their homes to storms are being rightly punished by the deity.

OT: The Rippling Rapids Old Farts League started today! Sixty or older men only (there's a separate Women's league for over the hill), those over 80 hit from the red tees. First time all year. I woulda beat Dumold! Our 9 hole best ball was 2 under, and I had eight great drives over 200 yards and chipped one in from the rough! I may never play this good again all year!...

Yes everyone. Only GOD gets to decide the winners and losers. The losers can die because they’ll be more hungry people ready to take their place and they had so much $$ the winners wouldn’t even feel it.

Shameful.

Toomush Expectashuns's avatar

Yes, but we all die. So, losers all...

Toomush Expectashuns's avatar

I don't think we have to worry about that. But the ones who come after will still struggle to understand and succeed...

Toomush Expectashuns's avatar

That's the trick! Here's hoping we moved the needle forward...

Whatever is troubling you can’t be stupider than a Smart Car with a lift kit and big knobby tires like the one I saw a few minutes ago.

Bagels of Doom's avatar

So, a Smart (debatable) Mario Cart is what you're saying?

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

I’m trying to calculate how badly the modifications fucked the fuel efficiency, which is the only reason to own one of those cramped pieces of shit.

Bagels of Doom's avatar

Not to mention the material efficiency. Physics is not your friend.

Bagels of Doom's avatar

Oh, I just mean in general. I have no immediate threats to my sanity but the usual.

And only downhill from here.
