He made a claim that the interviewer's assertion about Republicans was false. He did not support this claim with any evidence, because it is itself false. Whether or not he is aware of the particular survey the interviewer tried to cite is irrelevant. Making assertions that are false, because you don't know any better, is a form of lying, not appropriate behavior.
