Meet Their Demands, Obtain a Higher Standard

When President Bush played Solomon on embryonic stem cell research and declared that NIH funding would only go to research into established lines or new ones developed from techniques that didn't result in embryo destruction, it set off a race to see if you could, you know, actually create new stem cells lines because God forbid Bush issue a mandate like that without making sure it was possible! Well, it turns out it was possible: scientists announced today that they had found a way to create new embryonic stem cell lines without destroying embryos. Are the fundies cheering? Well, if by "cheering" you mean "denouncing it for various reasons," then, yes, they're cheering.
The National Catholic Bioethics Center told reporters that taking a single stem cell from a developing embryo without destroying the embryo makes human life "a starting source for harvestable raw materials, in a gesture that reduces young humans to commodities." I think that might mean he's watched the Matrix a few too many times, but I don't really know. Also, they've now decided that a cell from an embryo might be enough like an embryo that it counts as "life" and thus is killing the unborn, blah, blah, blah, can we please stop these people? Why won't they just admit that they don't like science right up until they need it and then leave the rest of us the hell alone?
