" it makes sense to argue for the transition away from oil primarily as an economic issue."

So what you're saying is that we're not seeing a change in how society functions, the outcomes just happen to coincide with the smart thing to do. That's... not a good sign for the long term future. We're one invention that makes coal cheaper away from a switch to coal plants.

Kind of OT:

The wifey is a marine biologist and climate scientist, and she developed a curriculum for adult informal education about how to fix climate change at the community level. You know, before we all are boiled alive in the ever-acidifying, rising oceans!

The course is called Climate Stewards, and she developed it as the academic coordinator with the UC Environmental Stewards Program. It's moving from California organizations (for example: CA State Parks, master gardener programs, museums, community centers, nature reserves, etc) into other states, so if you're interested or want to learn more about it, click this shit:

That new refinery, which is sold in the US media as so anti-environmentalist, is meant to reduce imports of gasoline (previously, we had to export oil, and import gasoline). Keeping out foreign "investors" -- besides doing away with the need to return dividends -- also lessens the pressure to be exporting what we know is a declining resource (something we've known for years here, and are using what fossil fuel there is more as a bridge to tide us over as alternatives come on line than as an answer to our energy needs).

Now we just need to get those grubby US and Canadian hands off our minerals and don't even think about us exporting our solar power at some special price (like you forced Mexico do do for the US back in 1924, and still expect Mexico to do).

The US did not have a full time scientist as president, but Jimmy Carter has a scientific education and that made a difference. In his day, Jefferson was a pretty good amateur scientist for that era.

We elected Al Gore in 2000, if the popular vote counts. It would have been historic for the environment.

Instead the Supreme Court installed two idiots from the oil and gas industry who advanced drilling and fracking.

The oil business in Mexico has a new boss, who loves renewable energy. Solar, wind, geothermal, all of it! Mexico isn't going to stop selling oil, nobody is, the money's too good. I think she's going to be very successful implementing her energy plans. The 🛢 bidness doesn't try to run the country, like it does in America.

During her tenure here in Mexico City as the governor (yeah, we're called "City" but we're the State of Mexico City) solar panels started going up on the roofs of the public markets as they're being remodeled. The Centro de Abastos (the largest roof in the western hemisphere) now provides electrical power to somethng around 10,000 users. Waiting for my local mercado two blocks away to get its solar panels up.

We've also been electrifying the metro and the new "trolly-bus" lines, as well as the metrobus and other public transit facilities (including cable cars which are cool) and the interurban trains.

More hybrid (or EV) city vehicles, though not the garbage trucks yet.

Grew up on the dirt roads of Laredo. Who’d elect a girl first in 1974? American and Texan men especially, you are some dumb motherfuckers. You need to get your fragile masculinity in order. Thanks a fucking lot

Don't you see? After four years of competent governance under Ann Richards, Texas HAD to elect a Connecticut-born failson, dry-drunk, TANG AWOL, cosplay cowboy. She MADE them do it!

"In renegotiating Pemex’s debt," How did a fossil fuel company get into debt? Aren't they money machines?

Expand full comment

It was the largest revenue source for the state and basically a cash cow for the neo-liberal governments, which just automatically took out more than PEMEX was turning in as profit ... probably by design to justify selling off a state asset to private investors.

Expand full comment

I don’t know if this is still the case, but at one point Pemex profits were responsible for half of the Mexican government’s operating budget.

Expand full comment

Exactly. One thing that ended with AMLO's administration. It's paying down the debt it accumulated, and actually turning a profit again. Even with less exports.

As Mexico elects a woman who is a climate scientist for President, in Texas ...

Texas professors sue to fail students who seek abortions

"A pair of Texas professors figured out that their female students have sex and, boy, they do not like it. So now the philosophy professor and finance professor are suing for the right to punish their students who, outside of class, have abortions.

"Pregnancy is not a disease, and elective abortions are not 'health care,'" University of Texas at Austin professor Daniel Bonevac sneers in a federal court filing with professor John Hatfield. Instead, Bonevac writes, because pregnancy is the result of "voluntary and consensual sexual intercourse," students should not be allowed time off to get abortions. If the students disobey and miss class for abortion care, the filing continues, the professors should be allowed to flunk students. Additionally, Bonevac asserts that he has a right to refuse to employ a teaching assistant who has had an abortion, calling such women "criminals.""

Expand full comment

I want to see where on the syllabus the assessments include "not getting an abortion." Because you can truly only fail students who don't meet the grading policies, which in turn must be assessed using fair and impartial rubrics.

Given that cis men can't get abortions, there's no way to apply a standard about abortion that doesn't violate Title IX.
