It’s chestnut season here in the French countryside too. On our weekend hikes we almost always encounter foragers, usually older folks, sticks in hand to aid collection efforts. There will be roasting carts in town centers and some places even have festivals where small teams of volunteers will roast thousands of nuts on a simple set-up of long pits dig into the ground coveted in grates. I love the fall tradition, although I never really developed a taste for the starchy nut, which often finds its way into turkey stuffings and other seasonal dishes.
