Wow, what an indictment of our child welfare. I want to forcefeed this article to every politician attacking LGBTQ people by warbling "Think of the children!".

Because the warden of the LA penitentiary is named Burl Cain*. That's an example of why I think this shitty timeline is being written by a failed 70s TV soap opera writer.

What is the blood thirst that these men possess? Good lord, they like to be in power of people who are uneducated, jailed, or dead.

It shows they are tough on crime. No really, they campaign about this sort of thing.

It is not so much blood lust as cold, cynical politics.

You should know that the "conservatives" identifying as Christians are very likely to tell you he had no objections to assassination by the State, because he went willingly to the cross. That way, they can excuse their bloodthirstiness.

It’s both tragic and laughable that bloodthirsty Republicans characterize themselves as “pro-life”

I oppose the death penalty with every fiber of my being. That said, I lived in NO when the Frank killings happened. She is not the best case we can use, her horrific upbringing notwithstanding.

I don't know the specifics of the case, but it is hard to imagine someone suffering that level of abuse is working with a full deck.

There was another cop at the time who was apparently a serial killer. He would dump women's bodies off the I 10 overpass into the swamp. They still aren't sure how many since they only recovered a few sets of remains.

TPM:

McHenry Seems To Meet Dems’ Two Non-Negotiable Requirements For Their Votes

Many Democrats coming out of the caucus meeting highlighted two dealbreaker requirements for their votes for speaker or empowered pro tem: S/he must have voted to certify the electoral college totals after the 2020 election, and to raise the debt ceiling this summer.

“There are concerns about anyone who voted not to certify the states back on January 6,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA). “Empowering somebody like that would be hard.”

“I would want somebody who voted to lift the debt ceiling so that our country wouldn’t go in default, and that would vote to keep government open,” Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) said, adding: “And also I would want to have somebody who did not vote to overturn the election.”

McHenry, coincidentally, meets both of those standards.

I didnt know about Antoinette Frank’s background, but the crime she committed was heinous. She robbed and killed the peoples running a family owned restaurant where she herself had been working as a security guard. I believe she killed her partner, too. It was premeditated and planned. The restaurant staff were teenagers. I dont think she should be executed, but she should rot in prison.

Brando's avatar

Yep. These are heinous crimes and deserve the maximum punishment. But the maximum punishment should not be execution.

Agreed. Especially cops. The fear of death by inmate or guard every day is enough punishment for me.

Even serial killers have origin stories. Trump has an origin story that includes abuse too. It’s just impossible to define what percentage of his abusive behavior is due to his having been abused versus his choosing to be abusive. It’s all irrelevant though. The death penalty is basically ritual sacrifice and serves no true benefit to society whatsoever. The most evil motherfucker you can think of still shouldn’t be ritualistically sacrificed by the government. It’s not about their alleged crimes or guilt. It’s about the government being allowed to have power over life and death.

Heck, look at Hitler or Stalin's life up through young adulthood--you can't help but feel sorry for them. But then they did the genocides.

To me it's less about "do they deserve to be alive" (they usually don't) and more about "should the state, which we give massive power to, have the ability to kill someone they have at their mercy at the point at which they can do no more harm to the public."

This is why we should abolish the death penalty. Too many innocent people are there for crimes they did not commit. If you're poor and you can't afford an attorney, and you're accused of a crime, you're fucked. You're going to prison.
