I was just reading an older article where some numbnuts was talking about what a wonderful, deep bench the GOP had. There wasn't one charismatic person, or one good idea, in the 17 candidates, yet they thought their problem was too many talented candidates. Blergh!

First, no one in Washington gives any actionable credence to polls; second, Merrick Garland is about as liberal as Huckleberry Hound, third, even though Bork's nomination was rejected in committee, he refused to concede and insisted on a full Senate debate and vote, which was GRANTED. Yep, the Dems opened the door that Republicans need to open now and either confirm or reject this nominee. You got nothin' --- except a crippling outlook and a profoundly fucked-up sense of propriety. Your user name makes me ashamed for all Americans. I would like to add incumbency breeds laziness among the electorate. Think about Ted Kennedy, in office for decades, then when he dies, a Republican is voted in the special election. The only possible explanation is that over time, opposing voters throw up their hands and figure why bother? It's the same shit that kept getting Strom Thurmond elected, even though he was basically Weekend At Bernie's.
The system is set up to breed incumbency. Voter registration is not considered to be important and left in the hands of the parties to promote. Incumbents introduce voter restrictions and gerrymander districts to disenfranchise those who won't vote for them/ the politicians pick the voters. I can't think of any similar legislature in the Western World where elected leaders serve for decade after decade.
It seems to work in Aus in that people are actually fined for not voting. Seems weird, I agree but then easy access to deadly weapons would seem weird to them. The mandatory register is easy to do; it also works as a census and enables local govt. to plan for services in accordance with the needs of the actual population.
