The nuns are married to the head of the church (the "real" head) but I guess the priests aren't married to the Holy Mother Church. That would upset the whole "God exemplifies masculine traits, and his children make up the Bride" deal.

(The roles and archetypes in my own comment here are starting to give me a headache)

The Editrix is right in that the "Church," after Vatican II and John XXIII of blessed memory, is the entire "body of Christ." But when folks, especially recovering Catholics (also known as agnostics or atheists) like me, criticize the Church, we are criticizing the hierarchy, or as Brother Pierce has forever named them, "the international conspiracy to obstruct justice." They get criticized unrelentingly until they (1) fully admit their wrongs and (2) atone. Until then, they are scum and unworthy of the company of civilized human beings. As to the New Pope, I think Brother Pierce has nailed it once again: "You do not fk with the Society because the Society will fk your shit up." Never, ever, underestimate a Jesuit.

This. To the extent that I ever comment on Catholicism (or any other religion), I try to confine myself to discussing institutional behavior, not the beliefs or believers.

On a positive note, particularly in Catholic/Orthodox circles, symbolism is important.

Here's a Santorum-style pontiff: Pope Alexander's claims to fame were taking over much of Italy by force with the help of his son Cesare (yes, his son), a racy relationship with his daughter Lucrezia (some say her son was his), and his affinity for throwing large parties, bordering on orgies, that usually culminated with little naked boys jumping out of large cakes.

Santorum could be his own pope: Pope Dope! With Kathryn Jean Lopez as Mother Superior of Nagging Guilt, William Bennett has Monsignor of Virtues, and Pat Buchanan as Reichsfuhrer.
